Just tell them that the info is from the "GM Jay, Facts and Figures" book, lol.
Well, WE ALL know the knowledge that Jay brings to the table. Not sure middle of nowhere Missouri knows THE TRUTH yet

Was helping the boy replace axle seals this morning and got tripped up on a odd axle nut. Don’t have the tool to get this guy off and have never seen an axle nut like it and also couldn’t find another like it on the Google box. Even a 38 MM twelve sided socket wouldn’t fit over this guy. Gonna have to hunt down something get this pos off the axle….

I've removed many of those nuts in the past, but I don't recall anything out of the ordinary with them.
Do you know what socket? Was it a spline socket or just a 12 point be ok? Everywhere I checked said 36mm but this one is much bigger. At least 39mm.

I just remember it being a 12 point socket. Haven't a clue on the size, it's been too long.

12 point socket was the confirmation I needed. I’m going to caliper it to see what size I need so I can order the proper size

That's interesting, I haven't seen that either. 'Course, it's been 15+ years since I've worked on an S truck

Those should be 36mm but I use an SAE, you can rent a set of axle sockets from O'Reilly's/ AutoZone so you don't have to buy it to only use 1x.

I've been fortunate and that 25 years ago I walked into a pawn shop and found almost a complete set of Snap-On 3/4 drive sockets/ ratchet for under $200. It's saved my rear many times having all the large oddball sizes.

It's not 36mm. I've got that in my toolbox and was way too small. I went and bought a 38mm 12 sided socket. It, too, was way too small. I'm putting a caliper on it today to determine exactly what size it is and ordering a socket based on that. I only wish it was the size that the rest of the internet said should be on it. I have a feeling that at some point in time someone replaced the axles on this blazer with some chinesium junk which gave us this janky axle nut situation.

Weird. I've always done those with a 12 point. When it's that big and I Dont have big enough metric a big 12 point American socket should to it. Sometimes you have to tap them on. Sometimes there just a little loose but should do it.

Never have seen a 12 point AXLE nut, just the tin shield over the real one........learn something new every day
That does look like a tin cover.

Edit:
I looked online and that is a tin cover that keeps the nut from backing off with a 36 behind

If that's the case there should be a cotter pin running through the tin cover. I can't see that being the cover, if it was that would be an epic fail for the history books for COB but I don't see him being that naïve haha.

If you have/can source new nuts and just need to get them off, there is always the pneumatic universal wrench.
