Glove Box Wire

My glove box works great - as soon as you turn the knob the whole mess drops straight down and dumps everything.

Where do you get the wire that inevitably breaks? Have never seen one listed anywhere.

There isn't one. The pocket of the door is supposed to catch on the top of the dash opening. Either that portion is broken off or the 'hinge' is coming apart and letting the whole thing drop down out of place.

Really? I have a wire but the end is broken off. It goes on the far left side and looks just like the one I used to have in my '84 Monte Carlo.

The dealer back in the day messed with the glove box - added an ASA? AC setup - and had to swap the glove box out with a smaller one. Hoping the new Vintage Air I have doesn't need that, so I can swap in a full size box again.

Must be part of the aftermarket AC setup. The old aftermarket setup I have utilized an end cap after sawing off a chunk of the original inner glove box.

I have a 77 no ac and a 78 ac glove box. There is no indication of a wire being apart of the function of the glovebox especially to hold it open. Mine falls out too I just stuck it closed and the knob fell off lol

If you’re referring to the one you got from me, then there was actually a wire installed to keep the glove box from dropping all the way down. It wasn’t anything special though, just a small cable with a ring terminal crimped on each end, screwed to the dash and the door. Definitely sounds like the OP has a similar style aftermarket AC.

Yep, that'd be the one. I went through all of it and then boxed it all up and I don't remember many of the details. The piece that gets sawed off must be the area that's supposed to catch on the dash. Curiosity is going to have me looking at it all again.

my 85 k20 is an ac truck.

it has a 'contoured' glove box pocket and NO wire.

the pocket catches the dash opening.

you can just get some 'flex wire' and crimp some ring terminals i would guess.

I’m almost positive the part on the back that catches the dash gets cut off, along with some of the end, to make room for the blower.

You could make the wire. Get a couple of the red ring terminals (smallest size) and crimp a piece of wire the length you need..

Braided non insulated would work best but that’s called cable I think at that point

That's correct. Copper is prone to work hardening and breaking, although most of us don't use the glove compartment enough for that to be a concern. Also, it's something everybody has, or can get easily.

If you know someone who does serious game fishing they can probably make up a piece of stainless cable for you.

No but when I was young I was fishing in North Dakota and I found a brand new fishing pole ontop of a long burnt out fire so it was undamaged. It was one of those 7 to 10 foot(vague memory) poles with large grip and an at least 1 1/4 inch rear “eye” guidenthing. Didn’t have a reel tho. Collapsible into 3 pieces.

Yep, you are 100% correct. The end got lopped off, but also the whole top lip as well.

My 84 Monte Carlo had a cable - that was OE. This one is probably added with the aftermarket AC setup. I'm going to try and snag a complete glove box pocket so I can make mine a full size normal setup again. Dont think I'll need the pared down box to clear the under dash HVAC.
