Bent Crossmember

So is it me that is stupid, or was this crossmember supposed to be on the inside of the frame rail???

I went out to start pulling the trans and found some crossmember damage and bent frame flange. I have another crossmember from the 85K10, and I hope a 2 pound short handle sledge will allow me to straighten that bent frame flange. Something tells me, the crossmember was supposed to be inside the frame flange and that damage could have been avoided.
Anyone know for sure???

Yes you are correct. That is supposed to go on the INSIDE. Looks like someone did some tranny work and didn't get everything back together correctly.

I know it supposed to on 2wd, just not positive on 4wd. I'm sure C4 would know and a few others like skysurfer and 89S if he looked at his.

Holy ****, I never saw one bent up like that.

I would say maybe they did it to lower the trans for a DS angle or sumtn but that doesn't even look like a lifted truck. And when you see somebody using that flexible exhast tubing(which is illegal to use in PA on a passenger vehicle or light truck), who knows what this guy was doing. He was definately see-sawing on a rock or sumtn.

What is the year of the truck hoss? Where is that, from your junk yard field trip?

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to on 4wd, too.

Mine was bolted under the frame rail same as your truck. My cross member is also bent.

1 owner, it had non factory grade 8's holding it in so I know someone had the transmission out, my uncle did mention it had a new clutch. The same mechanic put the cheesy ass little aluminum radiator in the truck that was the wrong size.

Sounds like kind of a hack mechanic.

What we probably need is a pic of some sort of underneath there of a truck we know has not been touched (maybe need impossible )

DOH !!! So it does go under then. I'd say 3 for 3, it goes under and thats why the bolt holes line up, and the reason for the bushings on the bolts. Mine has bushings too. Kinda nice to know though, cuz now that make me think I am going to do a 2in body lift, and that damn thing is going over the frame flange to compesate the lift and I won't have the problem again. That is about the stupidist thing I think GM could have done a K V series truck. It just says, "**** me up" all over it.

Those bushings are important, once the crossmember is bent like mine it blocks access to the nut. It took a while to get mine loose.

You know what though? Those spacers on the bolts can be used to drop the crossmember for a lifted truck, can't they?
