My truck is needing a new wiring harness, and I don't know which one to go with. I know there is one on Jegs, Painless, and American Autowire. What full truck wiring harness would you recommend, are there any others to think about getting that I didn't mention? The truck has ac heat, single square headlights, and a 350. It has manual locks and windows.
Thank you.

Painless made right here in Ft Worth. we have a used a few of their components (door jam switches and interior lighting)and the showroom here has great setup to show all the harnesses. We have also used American Autowire and the quality is top notch (have the headlight relay kit )

Is the original that bad? ate up by critters. I took mine out and I was surprised how easy simple it is. other's have taken theirs apart and rebuilt them. The wiring diagrams are available on this site and I know all the connectors, pins and tools to do it are listed in various writeups.
here's a current picture of my setup

That clam shell comes in half one side is the front and rear lighting the other half is the engine controls. I used painless wire loom on the side that is done. I also used some of their wire.

The wiring is all chewed up, and the plastic parts are falling apart.
In you neck of the woods Texas pull that caraccas meaning the whole truck to a garage, and find a donor! probably cheaper. Or go painless, personally I would find a donor.

Painless makes a SB replacement kit for $700ish. I got a Painless kit that had more circuits and was still for a chevy column for about half that. Can get the new connectors for the large gang firewall connector at Rock.

Will locate all the PNs if need be.

I just did my 79 K30 with American Auto Wire kit #510347. Came out great. The alternator power wiring and main cab power arrangement is much better than the stock setup. Hardest part was mastering the old delphi-packard crimp connectors.

Since you have used both which one would you recommend?

How much cheaper do you think a good donor truck would be than a new wiring harness?

Rehabbing the factory stuff is definitely worth considering, the factory wire is real high quality stuff and you can get a lot of replacement harness plugs for the $700 an aftermarket kit goes for. I was planning on doing a kit in mine until I fished the harness out and took a good look at it, all the damage was within a few inches of the fuse panel and was all simple repairs.

I've done 20 or more full rewires with American Autowire and would not use another. Also, their dealers have stock on ebay if AA doesn't have your kit in stock. Sometimes you can save money on ebay too, and still get the exact full AA kit. They had trouble during the pandemic keeping up with demand that forced me to find this.
