The black wire is for injecting the magic smoke that makes it all work.

@chengny

Chengny should be able to help you out. I can't seem to find the wiring diagram, since a lot of the pictures are blocked at work.

Your power windows must be a transplant from a later model year. Neither power windows (or locks) were available as an option until 1977:

1977

1977 was the first year power windows and door locks were offered
as well as intermittent wipers. Along with that, the inner doors, door panels, and internal door parts were different than the 73-76 models. 1977 was also a transition year for bucket seats...early production 77's had low back bucket seats while later production 77's had high back bucket seats. There was also a new grille design eliminating four of the vertical dividers and one of the horizontal, and an inside hood release was now offered. Trim wise, 1977 was the only year to have a yellow/gold stripe in the center of the side and rear moldings...however, the 1975 GMC Gentleman Jim had this trim as well. The 305 V8 was introduced along with styled (wagon) wheels without center caps. One-ton (K30) models were introduced to the line-up, and with them Bonus Cab and Crew Cab models. Finally, an optional rear defroster was also offered.

Anyway here are the wiring diagrams for both the 77 & 79 versions (the 1977 system had a relay - 79 did not):

Notice that in both systems the black wire (that heads down to the motors) is shown to be grounded - apparently to a 1/4" stud on the motor frame.

Were does the black wire go in the first pic? It just seems to go around the outside of the diagram, but doesn't hook to anything.

Maybe you missed this (it was under the wiring diagrams):

Notice that in both systems the black wire (that heads down to the motors) is shown to be grounded - apparently to a 1/4" stud on the motor frame.

As confirmation that the black lead is intended to be grounded to the motor frame/mounting bracket, here is the wiring diagram for 1981 model year. The circuitry is still the same, but on this dwg it clearly states that the black 150 lead is to be grounded to the motor bracket:

How do the black leads - in the harness that you have - terminate? Is there a ring terminal on the end?

BTW: It's probably just a typo, but the way you describe the motor up/down power leads is backwards:

I know dk blue and brown is pass side and blue white stripe and tan is driver side

All the schematics I have looked at have shown:

1. The LH (driver's) side motor being supplied by the dark blue/brown pair
2. The RH (passenger's) side being supplied by the tan/dark blue- white pair

ok I am a dum azz I didn't have a wire diagram when I used my ohm meter to test the switch and the 12 in of wire on it or the 12 in of wire on the motors I could be wrong but if I had the schematic I would have hade the right wires for the right doors and I would have known what the black wire was and on a side note the black wire is hot when the pink is hot and is feed off the motor side of the switch . but sorry for asking :sorry:

I found out what is going oh so wrong with my power windows . at the window motor I get 6 - 8 volts at the switch I get 6 - 8 volts at the fuse block I get 12 - 13 volts so I have a bad voltage drop in the wiring from the fuse to the switch . I have a EZ wiring harness in the truck so I called them and was told that the 16 gauge wire that was in the power window circuit would not work going to the back of the cab then to the doors that I would lose a lot of power running over 12 feet to the motors . so I am going to make up relays for the motors that will be in the cab corners and use the switch to trigger the relays for up and down running 10 gauge wire to the relays to the 12 gauge wires to the motors and see what that dose
