Fuel evap canister. It stores fuel vapors coming from the tank and routes them into the intake system when the engine is running. It's a passive system and needs no maintenance other than checking for rotted hoses every once in a great while.

There is such a thing as a "charcoal canister filter", my '87 had one.

Same thing, the evap canister stores vapors in a charcoal membrane.

Dayum yours still has hoses on it. Mine's just sitting there with like 1 or 2 hoses hooked up. The PO took them all out so I've got no clue how to put it all back together. Whatever. Who needs emissions anyway?

Remove that 10mm bolt and look underneath that thing. I bet there is a two dollar filter underneath it that wants replaced.
