What is this part called?

I already put a new brake proportioning valve and gasket in (the white plastic connected to brake booster), but I'm wondering what the other part is called and what it does?

I'm thinking it's a check valve. Hopefully someone can be more specific

That should be it, allows vacuum to be held in the booster so if engine is off or dies, you have some boosted braking left to get to a stop.

My truck doesn't have that anymore, just a plain hose to the manifold.

I think modern boosters have an internal check valve. You can hear the whooshing if you apply brakes with the engine off, then it's gone and the brake pedal gets high and tight.

If it's a check valve, I wonder how it differs from the white check valve that's connected to the booster? Makes me wonder if the bigger black one is necessary or not.

Sometimes my brakes behave as though the booster doesn't have enough air to assist with stopping the truck. If I release the brake and apply it again, I typically get full power brakes. I figured it was cheap to replace that white check valve, so why not. Have no idea how old the original one was anyway. Wasn't sure if the other part should be replaced too (or eliminated if not a stock part or necessary)

Exactly, helps filter the fumes coming off the intake/carb.

MisterB now that im thinkin about it, I believe you may be the guy that taught me that trick.

F'n crack me up! That filter was pulled off of about 95% of the squares as a pos part long ago!! get a longer vacuum hose and eliminate that pos!
