I'm beginning to think that the center one was used on Burbs and K5's only, as that's where I remember seeing them. But for sure, '78 was the first year for it. I've had two '77 K5's and neither had it, nor do I recall seeing it on others.

My old '78 K5 and my '78 GMC K15 didn't have them but my dad's '79 K15 does.

My '77 K20 doesn't have it either.

Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason.

It's up there with, "why are dogs noses wet" or "why don't European cars have lug studs". Nobody knows.

I'm assuming so. Which means an original '78 hood can be determined by the flat front and a hole in the rear center. And an original '77 hood can be identified by a flat front, provision for the inside hood release type safety catch, but maybe no hole in the rear center of the hood. '76 and older would be flat front, no safety catch provision and no rear hole.

I just wish there were more original hoods around to prove (or disprove) my theories. But the original 70's hoods were already being replaced in the 80's with the factory superseded '79-'80 hoods.

I have what i believe to be a factory style line hood in storage that i pulled from a junk yard truck but i cant remember if it had that hole. Are there any distinct ways to tell originals from aftermarket?
