Finally got the old rotted 90% missing wood bed replaced with new planks and a custom torch finish. Rehab'd the old straps to keep some of it's former life & character intact. Just have to finish bolting her down.
Shou Sugi Ban/Yakisugi? I just bought a torch large enough to do this, about to try it on the lumber coming off my sawmill.

Are you going to add any type of oil or sealer? And did you burn it on the other side and ends also?

It looks really good by the way.

That looks great!
Thanks!
Did you seal both sides and both ends? If not, you should.

Fairly fresh in 2015, the PO said it was recently redone, so I thought they sealed the wood correctly. When this was taken I'd had the truck for just over 4 months.

It only took a few winter rain storms and this happened. These are in 2019, but it happened sooner than that, I just can't find any photos showing it before 2019.

Seal the wood really good on all 6 sides
Just have them laying about in the bed and haven't hit them with any poly yet. Waiting for some better weather before that happens. 60 degree days here aren't the best for curing in Mass right now. Appreciate the heads up

Thanks! Actually just used a bottle of propane and torch kit for soldering copper lines. Just took my time to get the desired look I wanted. Done it a few times on other projects so I had some previous experience, just not a lot. Haven't sealed it yet, weather in central Mass isn't exactly cooperating with me to get a chance to seal it. I just did the burn on the visible side. Will hit it all with a polyurethane once the weather starts getting better to do so. Almost half tempted to let the weather gray it up a bit before sealing it to add to the appearance and character to the truck.

seal both sides
A very common mistake in woodworking. Finishing only one side will allow moisture in the unsealed side and with moisture changes it will cup.

Lots of people's tables have gone canoe shaped because of not being sealed on the bottom.

@legopnuematic is 100% correct here. You need to do both sides. When you seal one side only you will have a moisture imbalance and the boards will curl. This will happen inside a house, it will happen outside in a truck bed.

Our members who live in more arid climates may have a different experience but down here in Swampy Flatlandistan there is so much humidity that we see this happen all the time.

I am about to try this Yakisugi on some oak boards for my gooseneck trailer deck. I have had it with store bought pressure treated boards rotting away in less than 3 years.

Boiled Linseed oil or Tung Oil work really nice as a preservative. Roll on a coat once/twice year. Mix with a little linseed based stain if you want a little color. These boards get a little drink on Tung Oil yearly.

Picked up a slightly rusted roll bar last week for 50 bucks. Had to cut out the cancer, weld patches back in and chop/fabricate the rear 2 legs as the bar was for a longbed and I have a shortbed. Finished last night with a coating of spray on bedliner.

Think it’s about time I switched back to the rallies for a bit, although I love my Halibrands.

That card trick works great, used it on my Jeep wheels and will probably do same on my C15 wheels.
