Yes you just need the shop air to keep the valves from falling into the engine [emoji51] and there’s several types of valve spring compressors that work with the head on, the harbor freight one works surprisingly well.

Headache rack came today. Just set it on there to eyeball. I guess it doesn’t look too bad. It’s going to live on there when there’s no need for the camper.

My buddy and I did this on that blue 91 Sub.

Rented a tool from Auto Zone to compress the springs - kind of a 3 jaw type twist handle tool, and had a pry bar looking one as well . Used the pry bar when we had room and the other when we did not .

Seems like the air would drive that piston to TDC so that portion was a no brainer.

Actually, I guess it drove it down, but it worked.

That poor old compressor ran a LOT during the process - oil was black afterwards.

Not a bad job with 2 people .

Just seems a little monotonous and time consuming.
One cylinder at a time, bring the piston up, fill with air, spring, retainer, seal, repeat.
That's like a lot of things to do. Lol....

One at a time, yes, and somewhat time consuming. He wanted to do it for a spark plug fouling issue .

Otherwise , eff it - let it puff on startup !:smoke2:

A little puff of freedom!! :D

Seriously, though, I get why people do it.

I tried to shut up the valve tap on an old Toyota 22re. That was silly, tedious, and pointless. Lol

You'd do best to put the piston exactly on TDC for two reasons. If it's not on TDC the air will push it down to BDC. If the crank is right on center the pressure can't turn it. Also something goes wonky and the air pressure doesn't hold the valves closed while the keepers are off a piston at TDC will keep the valves from falling into the cylinder.

Not to mention that pesky time of valve overlap where you think you may be on tdc but not so!

Come on, man, you gotta feel it!

Reminds me of this time I had to do a timing belt on an 87 Accord in an Arby's parking lot and I was a tooth off.
Good times. :D

Wich im currently doing. Wich is odd because some times it puffs every day on every start up for like 2 weeks straight then nothing for quite some time...
We're like puff brothers, man.
I think it has something to do with relative humidity or barometric pressure. :D
