On a short bed truck, it's more difficult. A long bed truck with 20 gallon tanks is much easier, especially if you just move the bed back temporarily.

I also like running the sending units on the opposite side they are meant to go on. This makes the nipples point outboard, letting you use a longer hose that loops out of the way as you raise the tank into place.

That's not a bad idea about running them opposite and then looping the fuel line.
As long as you dont pinch it or anything.
I did notice that the passenger side sender seems to have longer nipples on it, though. Not sure if that would be an issue.

When i dropped my tank i unbolted the brackets from the frame and lowered it down with a floor jack and pulled the lines off before letting the tank all the way down
Driver or passenger side?
It looks like the drivers side has a good bit more play in the lines. Not so sure how easy the passenger side would be.
I think it's totally doable, but even when I just had one line hooked up, the stupid tank didn't want to drop.
It took me a while to get those stupid clamps off, even working from behind it.
Crappy pics, but you can see how long those damn passenger side nipples are. Like twice as long.

What year are those sending units? I don't recall mine being that long on one side.

Ah, I've never messed with those ones. I had always assumed that the tbi version had threaded o-ring type fittings like every other GM tbi.

My senders are 87 and didn’t look like that. Not saying there’s anything wrong, just an observation.

Mine looked much like the ones I replaced from the plate up, except for the pump’s harness.

Mine looked much like the ones I replaced from the plate up, except for the pump’s harness.
My new ones were the same as stock and even had the same harnesses. The only minor difference was that the ground was in a different spot on the new units, but the same connection for the frame.

Well, I got both new tanks in, senders/pumps, new straps, and a new selector valve.
And everything works!
Hallelujah!
I've never even had a frickin gas gauge that worked at all, so it's pretty cool to see the gauge work on TWO different tanks.
And when I hit the switch to change tanks and it sputtered, then ran? That was pretty sweet.
I know it's not a huge thing, but a big win on getting this truck back where I want it and back on the road. [emoji106]
