vbb, what is the 502 in? At a hot rod shop I worked at we had a 502 in a 33 Ford 3 window coupe for a customer, so when the engine was in the frame (no body yet) our morning coffee consisted of firing up that baby to listen to it grumble while we smiled & drank coffee. Great engines!

I was wondering when someone would ask ;)

This is how I bought the truck. It has regular rims all around, with duals & hubcaps. The inner rim looks like the outer rim, is held on with long hex spacers, then over the 8 hex's is another big hub that goes between the rims...then you bolt on the outer rim. It is a 14 bolt rear end in it too. I looked close at the box last night where the fiberglass fenders bolt on, that box is an original dually box with the flanges & all where the fiberglass fenders go on. Here is a picture of the drum, a hex, and the big hub that goes over the hex's. As you can see I have a bit of sandblasting at some point to do.

The front rims are the same.

Honestly, I like the look of hubcaps on this dually, it is odd, it is different, and unique, so I plan to paint or powdercoat the rims white, shine up the hubcaps and run it like that. All other dually's I have ever seen/driven and even on the innerweb have the typical dog dish in the back, and the type that stick out a bit in the front. This is the first time I have seen one like this.

Holy crap man! That's a lot of engine, and an awfully tall truck! I bet that will rip some crap up, or break stuff....actually a good chance of both!


That was the idea, doubtful it'll be axles or transfer case, or driveshafts, probably be a tranny if anything dies...


But I'm trying to make the whole thing bombproof with components that are tough ad nails.

Tranny can take 600 ponies with big tires.

A friend from years back had his trans and rearend of his drag car (80's Monte Carlo) cryogenically frozen and made the parts tough as all heck. Not sure of cost however. One time, with an "oops" at wide open throttle he hammered a gear just right, and somehow managed to go past the gear and right into reverse. He tore it all down to check it out and not a thing wrong with any of it. He said without doing that freezing process he would have had parts all over the place when that happened.

Just a thought, but like I said, not sure of cost.

With a double reduction carrier giving you a final 6.44 drive, and 2" axle shafts, it's unlikely I'll break one of those axles.

I was definitely concerned running such big tires with that motor I'd snap a 2.5 ton axle shaft, ESPECIALLY if the setup in my 5 tons matched a 2.5 ton with a Detroit in the front, solid spool in the rear.

Spool as in, 30 pounds of 7018 making the spider gears a solid ball.

With the 1.55:1 in the case (high range), the 2.48 in first of the th400, and the 6.44 axles... I suspect it'll be perfectly geared for the right torque application to really make that thing get up and go if I wanted to.

She runs like a diesel.
2500 rpms you're already at about 500 ft lbs.

I did the wiper conversion and new windshield this last week. In another thread I detailed the wiper information, but essentially I replaced the wiper arms with the newer style with the J hooks, and went from standard 16" wipers to 18" beam blades. That made a big difference in the wipers, I think the springs in my 35 year old wiper arms were weak, and of of course going to a modern beam blade, with a couple extra inches sure helps to.

So I've had a crack in the windshield, and a leak from windshield that pre-dates me owning the truck, so during the last week I had my glass guy come out and remove the glass. He confirmed that the windshield was definitely leaking, and the channel had some rust. Honestly it wasn't to bad. I've also got an old 77 Cadillac hearse, when the windshield came out of that the channel was gone. So nothing like that on the square. There was rust and some pitting, but nothing that couldn't be fixed up with a little grinder action. A couple hours later the new windshield was installed. Sorry I didn't think to take a picture with the glass out, but the new glass, seal, and strip sure look good.

Monday took the truck for state inspection which it passed with an A+, rest of the week just piddled with repainting my Anti-Antifa grill guard and reinstalled it. The horizontal bars on grill guard go thru the 2 3/8" uprights so it is extra stout. I fabbed it up a few years ago after taking out the front end of my wifes suburban with a 8 pt. buck at 75 MPH dead center, it vaporized the deer!!! Decided to repaint the headache rack also. The $7.00 cans of Krylon Industrial sure beat the hell out of the .98 cent cans of Walmart rattle can paint. I decided to not be so cheap this time and am confident it will last. Now I have to spend the weekend getting caught up on yard work. Place is starting to look kind of shaggy as I generally keep it manicured as best as possible. Ugg........:cheers:

State inspection is once a year, $7.00 fee, required to register it yearly. 10-4 on the suburban, but was able to do all the work myself so saved a ton of bucks on it as we only had liability on it.:cheers: Good as new here $900.00 later..

Once a year. We used to be able to separate the inspection date and tag renewal date by waiting til the inspection expired, then getting it done the next month.

BUT !!!

They changed a few years back to a "one step process" where you can get the inspection done up to 90 days before the registration tags are due, but you are stuck with that tag date no matter what.

I think the inspection for Goldie is $ 7.00. :D
