Good Morning Fellow Squarebody lovers, I have a question for you gearheads out there. What exactly am I looking at on my 78 Scottsdale 4x4? Is this a Dana 44 or a GM 10 Bolt? I've researched this and found opinion after opinion and pics that say one thing or the other. I need to order parts to replace bearings, races, and the u-joints on the inner shaft. I think Dana....but some pics just don't align with the general shape...so wondering if the cover was changed. Any help you guys could be will be greatly appreciated!!

MK

Looks like a GM 10 bolt to me. Clean it up and look for casting marks, just to be sure though.

That's definitely a Dana 44. I'll post a pic of my truck front end. Mine is 100% a 10 bolt in a 1980 K25 and looks completely different than yours.

Its a 44. But clean off the webbing on the front where the pumpkin goes to the drivers side tube and you will see a "44" cast into it. A 10 bolt will having nothing cast into that webbing.

The shape of the cover is different also. Mine is rounded all the way around. Yours is flat on both sides, just like the Dana 44 image in post #3.

I hear the 10 bolt is almost a duplicate of the 44. Anyone know if the parts are interchangeable? I know the guts in the pumpkin aren't......just wondering about all the other external items....

Everything from the knuckle outward should be interchangeable, IIRC.

Now thats what I'm talkin about!! Any mods to this guy? When I have it apart I am going to replace all I am capable of doing...without a shop or a welder. Great shot!
