What exactly cause these trucks to throw a code or get the check engine light on. I know there isn't a whole lot of sensors on them to do so what can do it? Mines not on but I was just wondering.

The ecm is programmed to monitor certain values to be within a certain range. Once it senses anything outside a pre defined range, it throws a code.

Think of this:

Your profile says you are 14 years old. Let's say you are 24.

You would likely date a 24 year old. How young would you go, 18? How old would you go, 25? 27? 30? Let's say 30 if they're a hottie.

That would mean your acceptable age range is 18-30.

You find a sweetie. They are 22. That is in the range, you're good.

You find a different sweetie. They are 12. Alarm bells should go off in your head, because that would spell prison. If you had a check engine light, it would be lit up real bright.

The computer has acceptable ranges for its sensor inputs. If you end up outside that range for whatever reason, the computer lets you know.

I don't know, at 24 I dated a gal that was 38, I still get a Cheshire Cat Grin when I think back to her and that was 21 years ago. :)

I like the analogy you gave though.

Could be an O2 sensor. That's what turned mine on in my Dakota the other day.
