Weird Brackets

I replaced my fleetside box sides on my 85 C20 and under the bed near the back are two brackets that I can't figure out what their purpose is. There is one on each side at the rear of the truck bed (bottom).They are pretty rusted up so I was thinking of just leaving them off--but maybe they serve a purpose I don't understand?

Iirc, they just keep debris from getting up behind the bedside and taillight area.
