vortec 454 external oil lines(want to delete)

I have 2 lines on the side of the block for the cooler. Im not using these for the
swap. Just to make sure (never dealt with this before) Do I just remove them and buy plugs for the block? anyone done this?

Also look at the oil filter, can a larger 1 be used? thats tiny.

No idea on the lines - but as far as the filter you have LOTS of options. A quick cross-reference of thread sizes and diameters shows that you use the same filters as the older Mark IV BBs. Pick of the litter there... What brand do you want to use? I like Wix personally, but thats mainly because I can use the big honkin 51794 2 quart monster on my 86 454. I like some extra filtration/capacity on these old engines. Do a little cross-referencing on summit or something - like I said lots of options!

Thread: 13/16-16 in

Just to be on the safe side I'd connect those two oil cooler fittings with something to act as a bypass. I'm sure it's possible to cause problems like with the LS

Rip em out.. block em off and get a larger filter that thing is meant for a car not a truck.

The part where your filter screws on has a built in bypass spring.

DO NOT simply block the ports! It can cause low oil pressure or no oil pressure.

I've researched this topic quite a bit and found all sorts of contradicting info and vague info regarding whether or not a bypass valve needs replaced with a different type, and in what location. I never could determine exactly what needs to be done, and apparently other people gave up too. I read that lots of people just plumb the two ports together. I'm just going to run cooler lines.

My 454 had the cooler lines also, just not from the block itself. It has some kind of adaptor that goes on where the filter is located, then the filter itself screws on to the adaptor. I've doing some research on what's involved with removing that adaptor also.

The lines going into the block started with the GEN V big block that had a revised oiling system.

Tons of oil filter options, many with the 1qt+ option. I run a huge on on my truck. I can't remember the oil line issue but I remember there was something about just blocking them causes issues. If i remeber some guys were using an oil filter block off plate and than using the lines to do a remote filter.

One thing that I do find odd is your filter comes down straight, if i remember right mine is at a 45.

A lot of the Vortec motors are mounted horizontally if you have a 4x4 due to front drive shaft clearance. 2wd trucks were mounted vertically.

I would keep them. Nothing wrong with cooler oil running through the block. Pretty sure that's why they did it.

well I would not delete the oil cooler, the extra capacity and cooler operating temps is only a plus. however if you have the sandwich type between the filter and the block you can remove the piece between the filter and the block and replace with the filter only part and your good to go. however if your block is set up to run a cooler like the pic showed it's a little more difficult. you should run a u with the lines and just not plug the inlet and outlet. highdesertranger

I have added oil coolers to other trucks and got 10 to 15 deg cooler temps.
Got the same results on my 92 gmc by using an aux. oil cooler and bypassing the radiator.

Driver in a truck I would keep them. That being said I run a gen6 block in my race car with them plugged off. No oiling problems for the 5 yrs I been running it
