Does anyone know if the v-8 front crossmember and 85 and later v-6 front crossmembers are the same?

i'm trying to swap in a 4.3 v-6 where the v-8 once was in an 83 1/2 ton. i can't figure out where the v-6 mounts bolt to.

Presuming you mean for 2wd C10, yes, the cross-member is the same. The stands were located farther back in the V6, and may have been different.

That said, the 4.3 is a cut down V8. You can install the V8 motor mounts and position the engine using the transmission to locate it, then the position for the stands will be apparent.

I wish mine was apart as I would trade you. I have a 4.3/3 speed manual now, but I am going with a v8/T56 and will be needing those mounts.

@highdesert:

It does look kind of small in there:

You must be registered for see images attach

i can actually stand in between the engine and the radiator----makes it easier to work on the engine!

@Qwk:

i think i want to hold on to the v-8 mounts in case i want to switch back. But the v-8 mounts and perches are easily found at parts houses such as LMC or at the salvage yard. The same can't be said about the v-6 mounts. Probably because it's not a popular swap---everyone goes from 6 to 8. Not 8 to 6.

So anyways, as you can see i got it in there all bolted up to the trans. The rearmost holes on the crossmember DID bolt up. So we know the crossmembers are the same.

i will need to drill 3 additional holes on the frame on each side for the perches to bolt to. i can't start on that yet because i discovered my rear transmission mount is totally shot. i will need to replace that first which will help me get everything centered properly.

the c's really don't have an engine crossmember like the k's. they have 2 short ones that bolt to the frame and to the spring support. is that what you want the spring support or the short brackets. I have a set of the short brackets. highdesertranger

in a 2wd its just a matter of moving the mount brackets on the frame. Its been so long I barely remember but I think the brackets that hold the mounts are different as the frame narrows the mounts need to be closer to the frame to keep the mounts in the same spot for the block.

Or vise versa

Yep, they existed. 4.3's after the Integral Head 250 went away. What's really strange, They came with long shaft Th400 transmissions, where even the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks got the short shaft, and the V8 half tons got the Th350 or 700r4. Go figure that one out. :shrug:
