Truck won’t start.

I have a 1982 k10 with a 350 small block in it. This 350’s internals are stock but it does have a new edelbrock 1406 and a new street fire distributor. We recently got it back on the road and took it to a muffler shop and got some mufflers put on it and it ran beautiful. Today I went to start it up and it started as usual then ab 5 seconds after starting it sputtered and died. Of course I didn’t think much on it, it’s a old truck. Well I started it again and it ran and same thing happened. It repeated this until it wouldn’t run anymore. Now it just turns over and seems to want to fire on one cylinder while turning over. To me it sounded like it was flooded so I let it sit for a few hours. Tried again and same thing happened except it would run very very poorly when I would give it a little gas. And then it wouldn’t run at all again. Don’t really know what the problem is since the things I think would cause this are brand new. I will try to start it again tomorrow afternoon and if it’s possible I’ll try to put a video of it turning over. Anything helps. Thanks

Start with the basics. Does it have good consistent spark? Check multiple cylinders, it wouldn’t hurt to check the plugs. If they are wet with fuel clean or replace them.

Look down the carb, do you see a solid stream of fuel from the accelerator pump nozzles when you open the throttle? If not, you have a fuel delivery issue.

Hold the gas pedal to the floor while trying to start it. If the engine is flooded, that usually clears it out.

Check for vacuum leaks too.

I'm not familiar with your model of distributor but if it's like an HEI, I'd replace the ignition module or at least diagnos/test it.

This may seem silly, but is it out of gas?
Could be that simple.
And dont trust gauges on old trucks, mine reads half tank when it bone dry.

Sounds like fuel issue, so slso, try to start it while bottle feeding it. And take the line from the pump to the carb off, and crank it, see if te flow coming out is steady or there at all.
Clogged filter maybe? Hole in a fuel line so it grabbing air? Water in gas?

Have not checked spark but the day before I took all of them out and cleaned them. They were wet and carbon fouled but that was from a bad carb from before which ran WAY too rich. Thinking about replacing the plugs. There is a very good stream when pumping the gas I did check that. And I cranked with the throttle wide open till the battery bout went dead and it only seemed to make it worse. Thanks for the suggestions.

No it’s getting great gas. New edelbrock carb is working great. Thanks.

Whenever I have work done and then I have some sort of issue soon after I inspect the work that was done first to see if the work caused collateral damage. I've always thought it was a good idea to check the obvious first.

Could it possibly be anything to to with the new exhaust? I think it'd take quite the plugged up pipe to prevent it from running, but it's possible.

One time following a minor accident, my truck wouldn't maintain highway speed. After monkey around, I found a crimped y-pipe. In the accident, my motor rocked on the mounts enough to kink the passenger side drop on the y-pipe. Some creative work with a couple C-clamps opened the pipe up again, and it's been that way ever since.

I was thinking more along the lines of a wire pinched where a new mount was installed, or a wire melted by the torch or arc welder used to install. I used to work for a company that did car audio installations, knew about several times when they were installing sub woofers or amps and the screws they used went through the floor and into a fuel line and or wiring.

Had the police show up one day because a lady from the salon next door said her car was stolen while she was getting her hair cut, turns out the installer went out to the parking lot to get a customers car to do the stereo install, the key the customer left for her car also fit the Subaru from the lady getting her hair cut. The lady getting her hair cut got a really big apology AND a free car stereo.

Sometimes installs don't go as planned.

I have also had an unethical mechanic cut the rubber strips that keep wheel well water out of the engine compartment just to save them a few minutes installing new shocks, another reason I never let mechanics touch my vehicles without being monitored. No different from other professions, most are good at what they do, but the bad ones sure pollute the reputation of the whole group.
