Tire size?

I have a 1978 3/4 and I want to put a 4inch suspension lift on it. I have 16inch wheels on it now but would go bigger. I'm just wondering what would be the best wheel and tire combination for this size lift? How big can I go with out rubbing the fenders?

16" wheel is good if you'd like to keep sidewall. 17s may have more tire options available, but it's not like there are a shortage of options in 35" tires for a 16. I think a 35 would fit a 3/4 with 4 inch lift well. metric would be 315/75r16 for a 34.5" OD

Depends in the brand of springs. With softer springs, even 33's can rub the fender on full stuff.

Also if you remove your front sway bar for a better ride and for better articulation the tire can "get stuffed" easily. Here is a pic of me playing around with a 3" lift and 285 tires (33"). A bigger tire wouldn't fit without rubbing or some trimming going on.
And I do have extended competition style bumpstops on the front.
Edit: front springs are Tuff Country HD springs...

This truck had Tuff Country 4" soft ride springs. Granted I ran old school 16.5"x 9.75" wheels with 33's (32.8" tall), they would rub if I didn't trim the inner lips by the bottoms of the fenders. If you ran a 16x8" wheel with 4" of BS it may not rub with a a 305/70R16 (32.8" tall). I'm not sure about the 315's though.

I guess there really is a significant difference on what fits a 3/4 ton versus one ton due to the frame height and axles... I have 33s and no lift and a lot of room in the fender well. I think I can fit 35's as is but I'll probably do a 2ish inch lift if I go up in tire size.

Not really as much as you think. It has more to do with tire brand and sizing. Actual sizes are going to vary by brand. And then there's the metric stuff. 305/70/16 is a "33x12.5" for instance. But mine in that size measured an actual 33". But if you buy a "33" size if tire, it might measure as small as a 32". But a Dana 60 gains about an inch of front tire clearance all by itself.

not sure what mine were new, but they measure 32.75" now ... Yokohama geolander at 285/75r16

ground to fender is a touch over 40" / centerline of hub to fender is a touch over 24.5" with about an 8" gap from top of tire to fender

A 285 is a narrow 33", so that is giving you some fender clearance as well as the narrow stock rims. If you had a 305 tire on a common 8 inch wide rim with 4 inch backspace, you would have much less room to work with. I'd bet a set of Q78 Swampers on your stock skinny rims would look awesome.

I'd have to agree. but I got ATs to replace my old Yokohama's. maybe next time, lol
