I want to replace my door glass with new. Vent windows are scratched up / chipped. Door glass looks sandblasted. Original was clear - kind of hard to find it in stock now - everything available is green tint. LMC has one side; the others are backordered (I asked). Local glass place says they cant get clear anymore. These will get tinted anyways (darker)....just wondered what anyone's opinion was, what they got, etc. Can you really tell a difference?

Clear vs Green.

I can't tell usually looking through them, but if I look at the shadows on the road while driving I can see it and from outside the vehicle.

But, it is a subtle effect.

I assume it has to help some as otherwise why spend the money to do it as OEM.

My opinion, tinted glass looks better. It’s such a subtle tint but makes a big impact. Much richer looking, more depth. Middle pic is clear glass

What side does LMC have in clear? A few years ago the assemblies went out of production and I picked up a pair at a stupidly high price. One is clear and one is tinted as that is all they had in stock. I'll have to check which is clear and get back to you. They're still wrapped up as I haven't painted my truck yet.

My right is the clear one. Let me know if you're interested in the glass panel. I'm switching that one to tinted to match the rest of the truck.

They have both vent glass in clear or green. The right one (IIRC) is on back order in clear. I found them at another place - 2-3 weeks out - all in clear.

They are all getting tinted anyways, just want them to match.

@Doppleganger,

I like a tinted windshield but clear side windows. But one thing I learned was just how thin and soft windshields are these days. I don't know about the side glass, but I know the windshields are made soft so as to break out completely if a person hits them from the inside. Unlike my year truck's windshield was a 1/4" thick and hard as a rock. It was the kind where if a person hit it from inside with their head, it would get stuck half way through and break their neck in the process. These windshields now are thin and so soft that the smallest piece of rock tossed up by a passing vehicle will pit it. Mine is nothing but pits and hazed to from dust being on it when the wipers pass over it, the dust scratches it. I'd see if you could contact @AuroraGirl. She has a lot of truck parts. Maybe she might help you.

A few years ago I could find a NOS with the green band across the top. There was one with a blue band but I don't care for that color. But that was a few years ago and now, like you, I can't find any NOS from my year. I'll keep looking and maybe I'll run across one one of these days.

Also, one day a big rock was chunked from the tread of a passing Ford Bronco with big knobby tires and almost put a hole all the way through in my windshield. My old windshield was shot. So I had replaced it and cost me $250 and I didn't want to replace again, it was almost new as it was and now look what happened. It was fixed but there was so much glass missing from the hole there wasn't much they could do. Now I have this half dollar size thing right in my line of sight! I have to look around it. Had it been my old windshield that big rock would have bounced right off and maybe left a tiny little peck. That would have been it. But this soft one I have now has a big hole in it.

i do possess a lot of parts, yes. especially vent windows. random doors have em, some lay in piles, one is on half built truck. strange. my truck has the old style and new style that changed how it seals mid way through square life. guessing grandpa needed a door LOL

@AuroraGirl,

I remeber my old one had "LOF" in one corner. We have a Libby Owens plant here in town but they didn't make windshields here, they make glassware like dishes and stuff. After 90 years it just closed last year. They probably couldn't find anyone who wanted to do that kind of work anymore.

There used to be this gigantic pile of raw glass on one side of the plant. You could see it shining in the sun. I remember my uncle back in the '50's talk about sneaking into that place where that pile was and steal pieces of that glass. It's green. It was real dangerous because it was like picking up razor blades, the pieces were real sharp on every edge. I have a piece of it, it belonged to my mother-in-law. Her and her friends got a piece of it one night. It was the only excitement for teens I guess, and that was back in the '40's!

Do you have a good clear old windshield in good condition around anywhere, I could buy? It doesn't show up on Ebay anymore. I used to see them every once in awhile there, but not anymore. And the regular internet has nothing but new windshields. Probably it's because of insurance purposes. I guess the insurance companies think those old hard ass windshields like mine was, are considered a deadly weapon. I remember the horror stories I grew up on about how much damage they would do to you if your head hit them. We didn't have seat belts back in those days. I want one!

in a truck like ours the windshield was thick and sturdy but i dont think modern glass making changes have as much to do with safety as much more to with structure(at least in unibody). The windshield is a structural piece now and i think increased surface area has a lot to do with that and also how they usually sweep with the body of the car.

No i do not unfortuntely, i think my windshield is OE but its got two large cracks in it. And the windshield in my 78 has a crack up and down in 2 spots and a rock hit crack. All the glass I have is side windows and vent windows and most of rear slider and 1 aftermarket but older rear slider
