I know this to be true for steering stabilizers on both 2wd and 4wd, but never heard of it on the Tie Rods.

Yep, there's a bigger one and a smaller one. I can get pics soon.

Well, I thought I could get comparison pics, but all three of mine have the larger tie rod. Apparently it's my old Burb that had the small one.

Anyway, the bigger one looks like this:

The left tie rod is long and there's a short adjuster sleeve on the right side. The smaller tie rod has a small end on both sides and a long adjuster sleeve in the center.

So is the ball joint part of the tie rod a different size too or can a guy use the bigger one anyway if his truck has the smaller one?

If you are talking about the taper into the knuckle I think they are similar. There is a difference in whether they fit "up" or "down " in the different years. That is , the way the tie rod mounts to the knuckle, from the top down or the bottom up

Taper is the same. But the larger tie rod has a larger ball, iirc. The up/down thing was a change in '76 or so.

So if the taper on the ball stud is the same, it would seem you could use either one. So then I'd make sure I got the bigger one then.

Yeah, but you have to use the whole assembly of parts that match. It's all or nothing.

Yep, makes total sense. Same tie rod both ends, and correct adjusting sleeve.
