I've done tons and never used a trans jack It's always been 3 ton floor jack or blocks and wood. The best I ever did was my 88 reinstall using 2 8 inch concrete blocks, laid on top of 2 2x6's laying flat on the ground, raised it on each side and put blocks under the 2x6's or used 4x4's bricks whatever I needed for the correct height. then I just slid it up in place and it bolted up real easy.
all the others I just used a floor jack and another set of hands.
For doing a flexplate sometimes you can get long bolts, thread them in where a few bellhousing bolts came from, remove the corssmember and driveshaft, then slide it down and back or back if you can without going down.
I always use the floor jack right under the trans pan more towards the front.
They also have adapters to make floor jacks trans jacks.
