What it sounds like to me is you have the original 208 shifter/ linkage hooked to a swapped in 203. Therefore the shifter/linkage is a 3 position (2h, 4h, 4l) shifter mated to a 4 position (4l, 4h, 2l, 2h) transfer case. I am not counting neutral. The 208 is a 2h forward position and the 203 is a 2h rear position.

I took it for a drive, hard to tell but it seems like the front was pulling. When it was shifted downward. that's with the hubs unlocked, then when I got back. I went up the side of my yard cause the wife had blocked me out. It seems to roll smoother with the shifter forward, and wouldn't climb over the driveway dip, w.o rolling back and giving it some gas. I also thought the g80 would have been enough. Instead if was just letting 1 wheel spin, the other didn't show any marks on the ground.

Guess it's time to take off the cover, I need to drain the oil anyways.

are you sure it says 203 on the case. one scratch or speck of dirt can turn the 8 into a 3. you said it rolls smoother with the shifter pressed towards the dash. that would be 2H on a 208, which is what mine is. G80 wasn't that great of a posi anyway, the clutches went out too easy so yours are probably shot.

White tag, 8 and 6 bolts on the rear with the filler plug in the center. I'm pretty sure that's what a 203 looks like isn't it.

cast, the po prob had issues with the 203 shifter and had a 208 shifter. So they just changed it out. It looks like a heavy sob, is is possible to put 208 internals in a 203 case ? or mix and match.

Its a 203 then, and basically a 208 and a 203 are alot the same tcase, they are both chain drive, but a 203 is full time 4wd unless it has a part time kit in it. But the 208 is a hell of a lot lighter.

When in 2h, it drives and moves with the hubs unlocked.

I figured out the tranny deal, and why it seemed weird to me. Turns out the kickdown cable is present (the one I couldn't figure out, cause there was nothing to attach it to) but not connected. So that explains why it doesn't down shift when I smash the gas.

So after a couple hotrod threads- I'll just leave it like it is, since it's not hurting anything.

And hopefully next month order the Ord twinstick shifter. Then tackle the g80 and locker deal some time.
