before i look at replacing this temp sensor, am I correct to assume the sensor is only the smaller diameter brass that is in the block? the outer brass is a bushing?

I thought it was nailhead sensor that the head got broken off.

The hole in the block of that ‘81 engine should be 1/2”, and sensors come in 3/8” and 1/2” threads. Looks like an adapter bushing was used to make a 3/8” sensor work. Many aftermarket mechanical gauge kits include the adapter bushing.

thanks for the info. this not my original engine its a late 80s-90 engine. bushed to fit i did see that. guessing the bushing may try and come out when i try to remove sensor we will see. i think the sensor is a 13/16 socket to remove from the research I looked at. shoulda done this when the fender was off. Hindsight sucks.

It is a capillary tube sensor just like @fast 99 said,it's bushed to fit the original hole. Buy an O.E. sensor to match your gauge, done.
