So let's say you need a higher pressure pump to run multiport, can something like an Aeromotive pump fit into the stock opening and still use the stock sending unit etc., or would you need to modify?

Aeromotive is good stuff just a bit spendy. I had an Aeromotive 1000 on my Audi that little 4 cylinder was thirsty. Lol

FWIW, you do need a higher pressure to run all of the TPI and newer FI setups. The stock GM pump for Vortec 5.7 and modern LS vehicles is the pump that will work and will connect directly to the TBI sending units.
