I'll check out the EGR. Timing was done professionally after I mucked it up when I did the head gaskets on 5k miles ago

Alright guys, plugged the EGR while my wife started the truck giving it a little gas and it idled on it's own! Even after I unplugged the EGR it's idling normally.

So where do we go from here?

There's your problem. First double check the line routing and check to make sure ther isn't vacuum on that line at idle. There shouldn't be vacuum there at idle or just off idle. There is a chance that valve is sticking too. At least you know where to look now.

Well when I had my wife start the truck I had my finger over the line coming from the solenoid and I felt zero noticeable vacuum. My question is how does an EGR work and what changed by just plugging the line when she started the truck allowing it to idle correctly?

not sure if you have syringes laying around, but on another truck I tested mine with one. Hook it up to the egr and pull on the syringe (engine not running). If it pulls back in, it's good. If it doesn't, the egr is leaking.

Cool I rented a Mityvac that I'll try out this weekend. It's running SO much better. I missed having a vague sense of power...

Finally got around to checking the EGR... with the engine off, I pulled vacuum from the airline port going into the EGR from the solenoid and it held vacuum without issue. Is that what we were looking for?
