My truck didn't have a tailgate when I bought it. I went to a local junkyard and bought a random GMC one. It had 5 holes drilled thru it. These were supposed to be for the trim that was missing.

Only picture I have of it... it was 20 years ago. Can see two of the holes. The 3rd hole over was dead center below the tailgate handle.

I glued little plastic caps I had over the holes before I painted it.

You can see the little bumps that kinda look like rivets in that pic.

Here is a pic of a 78 tailgate I was stripping down. It had the big Silverado banner. You can see the holes are drilled through the letters.

My tailgate had holes when i bought it. I'm looking for a GMC tailgate band, they seem to be harder to find.

I had planned on a band but hesitated on drilling holes in a perfect tailgate. Plus like the black belt trims better, and the embossed letters I think look better with that.

Rather than going white letters might go gray or something that will match the paint scheme better too. White letters on a midnight blue/charcoal truck would look like a black tux with white socks. IMO.

I thought this was for a early '80's tailgate trim? The narrow version. Until like @78C10BigTen's is the late '70's version and then in the '80's it went narrow.
I'm old and blind (not really), but I can't make out what they say. Could anyone help an 'ol guy out....

@81squared,

You've been on the threads with all kinds of upgrades and repairs here lately. I hope you show us this fantastic truck when you get done with it. I'm looking forward to seeing what you've done to whatever it is you're working on.

Is that your tailgate in the pic? Uoooo. I like that color. Is that the color? If it's going to be a surprise don't tell me, I like surprises.

Not at all. You helped me out. Yes I will be posting some pics of it completely finished. But here is a pic of some paint work.

I appreciate all the help. This is my first squarebody resto. So far so good.

Having a 350 hot tanked and bored and me and a buddy are going to assemble it and install it.
