I didn't take the proper photo, but I found this tailgate laying in my yard and I'm using it on my 78 square bed with quick detach pivot hinge thing. However, the only part that doesn't work is the right pivot on tailgate. It's just a circle dish, so it doesn't secure tightly. Is there a place I can buy the proper fitting for the bed or is the tailgate missing the part. I can get a photo later of what my dilema is. Also, can bed-parts be bought for these? (Hinges, latches, striker, etc) one striker is bent to crap and I salvaged the left side bed-side circle thing from my truck which has a rotted bed.

The cup on the tailgate may just be stretched beyond liberalism. Rust and constant pounding does this. The rust makes the metal thinner and away it goes.
Check LMC for these parts.

Can the tailgate side be fixed? IM assuming that means the tailgates were... only... quick detach..?

Early models were not quick detach, '73-'74?

How did one mount the tailgate? Im just wondering if this tailgate is broken or it isnt quick detach, and if it could be made to. This trailer is on property so truly having slop in the one side isnt a huge deal but i would like to be sure its gnot gonna break something either.

To remove the non quick release gates, you need to remove the two mounting screws on one of the bed sockets. Not easy to do on an old rusty bed.

Ok but I have never seen non-quick removal tailgates. I'll have to check my '86. My 81 cabby (avatar) has the quick removal. My shortbed ('77?) box had quick removal.
One side is cup and round piece, the other side is a cup with a slot and the part on the tailgate is not round but elongated. Open tailgate about 6" and this side lifts out of the slotted cup and then tail gate moves off the round cup to round piece on the gate.
The supports have to be 'elbowed' backwards, upwards and then they slid off the tabs on the box.

Yes. My tailgate contains just two cups as you say. The slot on the bed is present.

My ‘75 has the slotted cup on the bed, and I think that was the first year.

So one would have to open the tailgate and manuver it to get the other bolt off the socket? That works for me. Do you think someone sells the non-quick release socket?

Yes, the socket on the bed, I think it is the same as the other side. Just turn it upside down and bolt it on. Of course you need to bolt it with the gate.

thats weird. the quick detach on my trailer(other one) works at about 45 degree angle upward, so a bumper would cause no issue
