Hey everybody, new to the forum. Just purchased a 1973 C10 2WD Suburban. Had a little bit of fluid coming from the trans pan, which I assume is probably a failing gasket. I am in the process of trying to put a new pan, gasket and filter on, but I cannot get to the two front to bolts that hold the pan on that are hidden by the crossmember.

I’ve tried to search on a few remedies. I have loosened the transmission mount bolts and lifted the transmission, but I’m still unable to get close if that is the correct method. I’m inquiring whether I should continue with that method with the correct tool or attempt to remove the crossmember if anybody has any experience in this please any help is appreciated.

Not sure if a 2WD cross member set up is different than a 4WD but I remember using a 3/8 wobble and whatever size socket - 1/2" ? without too much trouble.

I assume you mean the rear bolts? I don't think there's a crossmember anywhere near the front of the pan. If the crossmember that supports the trans at the tailshaft is what you're talking about, you can support the trans and just remove the crossmember. Kinda sucky for just a gasket job, but it'll get you there.

I went out and looked at my 454/TH400 combo, and I have no clearance issues. Sorry I can't help more.

Raise the transmission as high as possible, get as much clearance as possible between the pan and the crossmember. If that doesn’t help, slide the crossmember back.
