Hi all

Got my check from the insurance to fix my 79. The column is hacked from the theft
I was thinking maybe there is a better option than repairing this column.
Is there a go to replacement unit that is better than the original?
Is Going back to the previous body style column an option?
I would like to simplify the truck and installing a auto shift column that is safer or better than the original seems viable.

Looking for a repair kit to fit mine seems difficult. The 79 column shift non tilt is apparently unloved

Thanks for the help!

I’d say all non-tilts are unloved. While I’m sure anything’s possible within reason, it would be best to stick with a steering column out of a square body. Tilt is worth having because of comfort and parts availability. A newer column would move your dimmer and wiper controls to a multifunction stalk rather than where they are now, but if it were me, I’d just do an older column and keep the dimmer on the floor and the wipers on the dash. Anything pre-1984 should be fine. There’s no performance or quality advantage between columns, and if you want better response, that’s going to be in the steering sector/intermediate steering shaft and the health of your steering components.

Flaming river does OEM and custom drop in replacements, as good as new or better.

Just came across this thread. maybe someone could answer this question.... I have a 80 step side non-tilt, and would like to put a tilt wheel in. I came across one from a 78 that had 4 wheel drive. Would that swap out to my truck? Thanks in advance..
