Don't know if this is the right are or not.. but here we go I have a 89 305 camaro motor in my 82 k10 which is the 4 speed manual. The starter bolt holes on the camaro motor are side by side I tried to put in a camaro starter but it would not fit in the bell housing. But my old starter from my 82 305 will but only one bolt hole will line up since the starter holes are diangle from each other. Now my question is will in have to buy a custom starter to fix this problem or is there another way I can fix it ?

Nothing off the top of my head... If nothing else you could take both starters to the parts house and see if they can find something that will work. Just tell 'em you need a starter with the nose shaped like the first one and the bolt pattern from the other.

Generally the mini starters are made for universal fit. They have 4 bolt holes in them. They have different side by side patterns. If you have a small block chevy it should work.

Mini-starters bolt to the block not the bellhousing.

There are two factory starter bolt patterns, straight and staggered. The straight pattern starter is used with the 153 tooth flywheel and the staggered pattern starter is used with the 168 tooth flywheel. The blocks are usually drilled and tapped for both patterns, but not always. You can drill/tap the needed bolt hole (I personally wouldn't), you can use the smaller flywheel meant for that starter, or you can use an aftermarket mini starter that has that has the straight pattern and can be used with either flywheel.

Yeah I know about the teeth on the fly wheel but the problem is that the nose cone on the starter for the straight across bolt pattern will not fit into the bell housing though for some reason lol but I have decide to ditch the 305 ho motor I have in it now and go back to a gen 1 350 small block

So you are using the smaller flywheel then? You would just have to modify the opening for the starter. I'll also guess it's a K truck with an automatic that has the bolt-on aluminum inspection cover. Otherwise it would just be a tin cover in your way that you could easily trim or just remove the whole thing.

No the truck is a straight drive truck and its using a flywheel out of a 88 k10 because in 85 Chevy went to a 3 inch crank instead of the 3 1/2 inch crank in the gen1 motors

OK, so you have a truck trans, truck flywheel (168), and a 305 from a car. You need to be using a staggered bolt pattern starter to match the flywheel. If your 305 does not have the holes to mount a staggered pattern starter, you need to drill/tap the missing hole or buy a mini starter with a straight pattern that is designed to work with either size flywheel.

Besides the possibly missing bolt hole in the block, there's no reason a staggered pattern starter won't work with a truck flywheel and trans. If the starter doesn't fit with those, something else is wrong.

The staggered pattern works with the fly wheel and trans but was on the fence about drilling and talking the block for that patteren so I just said the heck with it and bought a new motor
