Starter install shim question.

Hey, I’ve got an 88 square body burb. 454 rwd and I just replaced the starter.

Yesterday it started right up. Today, this mess: (see video)


This is what the last starter sorta sounded like. What gives?

check the ring gear all the way around.

When shimming a starter I use an 1/8” drill bit between the mesh of the ring gear and starter gear…

Noise is irregular. If a new starter is installed on a bad ring gear it will need another new starter and a ring. They both need to be replaced at the same time or starter will be noisy.

A paper clip will also work to check clearance but can't ever remember checking that. Most times accessibility is a problem.

I’ll use the 1/8” bit. I think i can manage to access what I need to check with that method. It’s too tight down there to engage the gear and check with a paper clip. I’ll also take a look at the ring gear(that’s the thing the starter engages, yeah?). It looked fine to me when I was installing the starter, but I guess I can only see about a third of it at a time.
