I don't recall seeing any seal - between the female connector on the cable housing and the threaded nipple on the transfer case. Also, there is a pretty big distance in height between the normal operating level of the oil and the speedometer cable entrance:

You must be registered for see images attach

The gears are splash lubrictated and no oil level exists up that high. I would re-check that the cable end is properly threaded onto the trans case nipple.

Also, if you still have your original cable, compare the threaded connector with the one on the new cable.

If everything looks good - and you don't feel like pulling the cable and installing another - try making the connection up with a thin coat of silicone sealant, Permatex No. 2, The Right Stuff, etc.

If you are leaking at the cable, then it has to be coming out of the transfer case. The output shaft bearing on the NP205 transfer case has to be oiled, and so as a part-time transfer case it has an internal oil pump, so in operation there is oil up there.

The seal on the speedometer cable take-off of the transfer case is a pair of O-rings on the sleeve that is the speedometer driven gear retainer. Unscrew the cable, then unscrew the gear retainer sleeve, put a new one on, replace the cable.

Part number is AC DELCO #326561. I just ordered one from wylerbuickgmc on ebay for $14.64 and free shipping.

Im pretty sure that the NP208 has an internal oil pump but the 205 does not.

Huh. I thought as a part-time, it would have to, but I think you're right.

Makes no difference to the OP, though, and the fix to his problem.

There is actually 2 seals for the speedo sender. The O ring on the outside of the bullet, and then there is a funkly looking seal that you will only see if you pull the cable off and look into the end where the speed goes. It's a seal that the driven gear rides in.

Yeah, my mistake. I figured as a part-time it must. There must be something in an NP205 that spins all the time that sits down in the oil, to get the oil up to the output shaft bearing. The modded NP203 I have doesn't have any parts that spin all the time and sit in the oil, so you have to lock it up every hundred miles or so for a bit to refill the output shaft bearing oil reservoir in the tail cone.

Hopefully that does the trick. There's two rubber seals in that piece, and, after 30 years, rubber age-hardens, not to mention the wear.

Replaced mine as well. Seems tight now so far.

Im pretty sure that the NP208 has an internal oil pump but the 205 does not.

Someone was just telling me the other day on a FB page that a NP241C is better than an NP208 because an NP208 doesn't have a pump, but a 241C does. I guess I'd never paid attention to either one. I knew a NP205 didn't. I've also been told NP208/NP241C are about lateral to each other just like 10 bolt and Dana 44 fronts. One is a bit stronger than the other in a different area and the same with the other so pick which ever one you can get your hands on the cheapest and fastest.
