Some questions for restoring

Hi guys,

i would like to restore my truck and ordered a few parts at LMC. For my plan i need some tips, infos and help for some themes.
1. The rear sliding window must be changed. I ordered a new one with the rubber. Any tips for the change? Do i need special tools?
2. Which glue do i need for the indoor mirror?
3. It is hard to change the shift indicator? Do i have to remove the whole dash?
4. My cooler has 6 connectors. 2 for engine cooling, 2 for heating the cab and two metall pipes. Is this an oilcooler?
5. Which lube should i use for grease? And how much in every lube point?

1. No special tools that I know of besides maybe a friend to be stationed on the other side to catch the glass in case it falls out and a screwdriver. There are a ton of videos on YouTube that will help you immensely plus lots of threads on here plus articles on various websites. (

3. No, it’s just two small bolts and a string with a clip that attaches to the shift lever housing. I’ve only swapped them with the cluster out, but it can be done if you remove the bezel and gauge lens.
4. The metal pipes are the cooler lines for the transmission.
5. It depends on what you’re trying to lubricate. It sounds like you’re asking about chassis grease, and I use the lithium grease, which is like a chocolate color. For wheel bearings, I use the red wheel bearing grease. For bearings, they need to be thoroughly packed. Better to have too much than too little. For everything else, when you first start to see grease seep around the rubber boots is when I quit pumping.

How much grease?

2 pumps and 2 pumps only into zerk fittings every 3,000 miles.

Whatever kind is fine. I use green Mystik..

1- rear window is a youtube for sure
2-rearview mirror I ended up taping off a square and sanding the glass with 400 to rough up mirror fell off 4 times with auto parts glue before that
3-shift indicator isn't to bad, I repaired mine (just the cable was broken make sure you clean and lube track if you have broken cable
4-plus one on trans line to radiator
5-plus one on the grease to much will blow out and maybe crack old seals

thx a lot for your quick answers!! Are all grease nibbles the same or are there different sizes?
Only the wire from the shift indicator is broken. Can be fixed?

Grease fittings should all be the same size. Some U-Joint fittings usually need a 'needle-point' adapter/injector.

Shift indicator wire can be replaced with fishing line.

Buy an assortment and use what fits.

Depends on transmission.

With what? Use specs for your transmission.

How can i identify the trans?
Mix the old oil in the trans with refilled oil

You should read up a bunch to get a basic understanding of what you want to do.

That would help you ask more specific questions.

If you want to identify the transmission, take a pic from underneath that shows the shape of the trans pan. From there, use google images to match it up. There are plenty of pics out there that show multiple trans pans for comparison.

No matter which trans is included, to use dextron should fine right? This one in mentioned in the manual from 1973 and today you can get the Dextron III. Try to get it at a local dealer. What really great is that if the oil is at „Add“ you have to fill exactly one pint to get „Full“ I never ever saw it so precise in a manual. Normally „fill up until full is reached“
