Small block to straight 6 swap?

I like 6 cylinders in pickups. I'm not hauling much weight and will probably never tow anything heavier than a 17' canoe. Building a 292 to replace the wimpy 82 350 might be fun. I assume it would bolt up to the NP435 trans/bell housing. What would need to be done to mount it? Is the crossmember different? Is there a fuel pump available that is compatible with the factory dual tank setup? Might need different p/s hoses, new exhaust a given. Anyone swap in one of the big old V6s? Probably less economical and practical but it would be cool for sure.

If you already have the I6, measure the motor mount to bell housing distance, that will tell you if the crossmember needs to move.

I went from a 250 CI six to a 350 years ago, if I remember right we had to cut (shorten) the steel fuel feed line line to hook up to the SBC.

Frame side motor mounts lined up perfectly and no issues with the bell housing on the SM465. Factory dual tank hardware worked fine.

Pretty sure I had to source the block side motor mounts and I cant remember for sure but I think the clamshell motor mount (part with the rubber in it) was the same too.

'80 K-10 W/250 swapped in 350 from '83 K-5

Ive always wanted to swap my 350 for a hopped up hot rod 250 straight 6! Im watchin this thread.

I did the same swap only backwards. Took a 292 out installed a 454. It was a long time ago but don't remember it being much more than bolting and unbolting parts. The mounts on the block are different and like you said the exhaust, PS and ALT need new brackets. Tranny [4 speed] location was the same. Some of the wiring needed to be adapted. Overall, it was relatively easy to do.

edit: There were front motor mount brackets on the 6 cylinder that aren't used on the 454 so you will need those. It was an 82 2WD 1 ton DRW didn't have to change any crossmember, driveline or anything else major.

I was pretty sure it would be a matter of getting the right combination of factory parts and bolting it all together. If it involved a crossmember swap I would be less inclined to do it if for no other reason than the added time. Time to look for a factory parts catalog!

So I already have the straight 6 in my 82, how easy is out to throw a Muncie behind it? Or am i better off just building the 3 speed?
