I'd run it the same as an original vortec engine. Iirc, the passenger port and the passenger nipple will both go to the heater core. The driver nipple will go to the front port. Radiator nipple will be capped. I'm not 100% sure of that though, without a vortec truck in front of me.

The intent was oem routing, but I’m coming up short on finding a complete picture or diagram.

Are there rubber caps for the radiator nipple that just get clamped on like a hose?

Yeah, most parts stores sell the caps.

Tomorrow I should be over at a buddy's place with a 5.7 vortec that I can double check the routing, if you haven't found anything for sure at that point.

That’d be awesome!

I’m assuming both nipples on the water pump are pumping coolant out, correct?

So mixing the two should be without consequence?

I ask because it would be cleaner to use the passenger side nipple to go to the front of the manifold because the driver side nipple is pointing straight up and is higher than the 1/2” npt plug on the front of the manifold...

In this image it appears directional...

Water pump is different though.

To make it in there I’d need a preformed 5/8” piece that looks like a question mark. Or a u shaped piece and a 90.

Plumbing my cooling system this afternoon. I have some questions.

Originally my 5/8” heater hose went to the passenger front of intake manifold. The 3/4” went to the radiator just below the filler.

My water pump and engine are from the vortec era. The water pump has two non threaded hose nipples. The 3/4” nipple on the radiator is also not threaded.

Any ideas on routing the hoses, while maintaining proper external bypass AND using all of the non threaded nipples to avoid leaks?

So I’m not mixed up, I’ll call the two manifold ports front port and passenger port. In the water pump, I’ll call them passenger nipple and driver nipple.

Pics for reference, not actual routing:

The passenger nipple would cleanly route to front port on intake for bypass, then passenger port on intake into heater core, then from heater core to radiator. That leaves the lower passenger nipple on the water pump open though...

I could leave the plug in the passenger side of intake manifold and run the open passenger nipple from the water pump to the heater inlet. I’m not sure of the direction of flow from the water pump on the two nipples. Is the coolant flow outbound from both?

Thoughts?

Install it like stock, it will be the easiest.

Lol, I’m looking to. The vortecs had all manner of other fittings, tees, three way ports, etc.

I could get it done if I could figure out the direction of flow through the two water pump nipples.

Being it's a vortec block and a vortec pump, the hoses need plumbed like a vortec truck. The vortec blocks didn't have the built-in coolant bypass, so the bypass has to be plumbed externally.

Google showed me I had the pump nipples reversed.

The 3/4 hose from the heater core is the one that goes to the passenger port on the intake. The other goes to the driver side nipple of the pump. The passenger nipple goes to the driver side port of the intake. The radiator nipple gets capped.

Awesome, thanks @bucket ! That’s the stuff I was looking for. Fired up the razor and took a trip to my other garage. Found this bin with a vortec intake and other crap.

I got a thermostat housing that may work, timing cover that I can rob the cps from, and a dizzy I can strip for priming.

My vortec non-factory bypass cunumdrum fix. Ya that's an ugly ass home Depot brass fitting but it works, just been to lazy to swap in the nice shiny one.

This bypass issue is only an issue if you aren't running a heater core or in my case a Vintage Air system with heater core shut off valve. Once the thermostat opens, it's a moot point.
