SAE or synthetic

So, my truck has 146,000 original miles. I have always used SAE 10-40 - not high mileage. It has always had a lifter tick. My dad (a career mechanic) and I tore the engine down to the block, lifters were checked/replaced as needed, magnaflux the heads and then reassembled at 97k - so back in late 80's maybe. Even after that, the tick remained. Are there any pro's or con's to using a synthetic? Also, what about transmission fluid - conventional or synthetic. what about this "stiction" I have heard about?

I ran one oil change of synthetic in mine and it promptly burned a 1/2 quart. Went back to regular 15w-40
diesel oil and all was happy again. I've run 15w-40 for several years now.

Thanks for the info. I use non-ethanol for fuel, so I will stick with the ol' tried and true SAE. That is what the engine was built to use, that is what I will use until I cannot get it any more. Just curious since there is so much of the synthetic out there.

I am a big syn fan.

Goldie is not - it (syn) will allow you to discover leaks you did not know you had.



When the engine gets done, syn will be used.

On my 116K leaky burny motor dino oil it is, and I have swung over to the 15W40 side as well.

Some newer,higher revving engines are built to run synthetic - your 40 year old square ain't one of them.

So my next question is........I tranny rebuilt. Needed to add some fluid and when I ask whether they used synthetic or non-synthetic, they (AAMCO) did not have a record of what was put in. When I ask if it would cause a problem mixing the 2 if I put in Regular Dex, they said no. What say you all????????

Should I take it and have it drained/flushed and then add back.......which?????

If rebuilt, I would have no problem with using synthetic.

Should mix fine.

Supertech is awesome oil.
In 1998 bought a honda valkyrie with solid lifters.
After break in, I needed an oil change, and just decided to use regular oil.
My thinking was sitting all winter..oil would absorb water..planned on changing again in springtime.
Terrible valve train noise with regular oil.
Shut bike off and drained and replaced with supertech full synthetic.
After 60,000 MILES..zero camshaft or lifter wear..bike runs like new.
Use supertech in everything I own..never an engine failure..

Ive suspected supertech was Warren. Its good oil.Napa brand synthetic used to be valvoline.Ive ran supertech for many miles down thru the years.
