Rotary Tools (Dremel)

So what are you all using? Any recommendations?
I had a super cheap corded one years ago that lasted me a few years.
When it quit, I decided to go with a cordless Dremel because dremels are supposed to be better than cheapos. Well it wasn't (gutless and the battery only lasted about a year), so I figured it was just because it was cordless.
So I decided to get a nice corded variable speed Dremel. It lasted about 4yrs of very light use (maybe 3x/yr for odd jobs) and it burned up. The lock was already stripped out by then, too.

So should I just say screw it and buy cheap $20 ones and only expect them to last for 5 or 6 uses?
Anyone get a good one that they'd recommend?

I think I payed $60 for mine at home depot about 4 years ago and have used it a lot and still going strong. I even put and end mill like tool bit and used it like a router to cut the counter for my gas stove to fit. Worked great!! So yeah I wouldn't get the 100 dollar one but, the $60 one has held up for me. Just used it the other day to fix my license plate lights.

I just get them on sale at HF. They seem to last okay. Get the cheap year warranty, return it, and start over.

Same with my air compressors, and welder.

No questions asked returns.

Welder has been perfect.

Returned the big compressor due to operator error. (I may have pulled it down a curb backwards, busting the drain valve off with a full tank of air). May have I said.

I've never gotten an extended warranty until last night, actually. Paid $6 for a 2yr extended warranty on a big battery charger from Walmart. With the way quality has been, I can almost guarantee that I'll use it.

I may like HF, but I dont trust HF. Quality these days is questionable for any company. I spent about a grand on a Lincoln, and it lasted almost thirteen months. The Vulcan is coming up on two year warranty, may be time for a new one. But I am attached to this one. Who knows.


I use they're tool cart also. It is darn good. Have no issues. Even with overloaded drawers. Thats pre new Liberal Captain America sticker. LOL. Yes, at 33 I still like the original(not the new abomination) Ninja Turtles.

I was using Hf stuff for a while but it didn’t hold up to daily use, great for an occasional use, I’ve always use pneumatic die grinders over electric for the power. Air tool oil is key to making any air tool last and give it a chance. I have a set of sunex die grinders and one variable speed Cornwell die grinder. All of them have been great.

Air tool oil is key to making any air tool last and give it a chance. I have a set of sunex die grinders and one variable speed Cornwell die grinder. All of them have been great.

I still use old Mac air tools. Not sure about HF quality there. Just speaking on what I use. Welder gets a big workout frequently, friend is doing his exo with it now. Big air compressor also used alot. The 3 gallon air compressor stays in the suburban 24/7, for air ups, and hasn't let me down. Those three I can speak to holding up fine.

For smaller stuff the price difference with no question returns is worth a shot.

I've got an electric Dremel brand, an electric roto-zip with 43" extension attatchment and an air operated mini-die grinder.

The dremel works great on small things. The roto-zip works better when you have the room since it is a bit larger and the extension helps get into areas like when porting. The air mini works pretty well for tight area's too, just takes a little getting uses to how much pressure you can use before bogging it down. You control the speed by twisting the aluminum part where my thumb is.

It's not a Dremel, but it is a rotary tool. Flex shaft that you can attach to any induction motor, horsepower rating of your choosing. Too bad Sears is in the crapper.

If it's still working near the end of the guarantee, plug it into 220 and see what happens.

The roto-zip is strong enough for porting? That's interesting, might be easier to handle than an actual porting grinder. They are bulky... but you need the power to actually get any work done.

It does take a little longer, definitely can't hog as much out as a good grinder, but since the rotozip has variable speeds, I prefer porting slower since at higher speeds my hands are not steady enough anymore and on aluminum an "oh ****" happens way too easy, lol.
