Replacement electric external fuel pump suggestion?

Does anyone have a suggestion for a simple reliable electric external fuel pump setup for a stock carbureted 350?

Is a fuel pressure regulator necessary?

I like the holley rotary pump and Carter makes a good one too that pumps 4 to 7 psi. The Carter i think is half the holley. Ebay has the Carter pumps for around 50 to 70$ last I checked.
In most cases you should not need a regulator.

Just mount it in a good location, away from exhaust heat, not too high above the tank.

Might look into the Precision line of electric pumps. Lot of options for inlet/outlet hose size. GPM ratings+brackets for mounting.

Welcome to the forum.
I grabbed a Holley red along with their external regulator due to online reviews for my build. Going to be wiring it through an oil pressure switch as well. Hopefully it wasn't a bad choice.
Following to see what others have had experience with.

I mounted a Carter rotary vane pump from Summit on my '85 c-30 454 dually about 12 years ago and it's always run perfectly. I included a relay and an external pressure regulator.

do you know which model? Summit has about 10 dif carter rotary pumps.
also, how loud is it? The pump I have now is so loud you can hear it down the street.

I don't have the truck available to eyeball the pump right now but I think it is the 4602RV Carter pump. When I turn the key on I can hear the pump but after I start the truck I can not hear the pump. It comes with rubber bushings to isolate the mounting bracket, making the pump quieter. Also, the pump should be mounted as close to the gas tank as practical, to avoid cavitation.

My engine is a 1980 350ci with a Holley 600 cfm vacuum secondary carburetor, electric choke. I got a Mr. Gasket #12S electric fuel pump (I haven't installed it yet). The package clearly states "A fuel pressure regulator is highly recommended". On Mr. Gasket's website, the "Shop by Vehicle" is deactivated as soon as I search for "Electric Fuel Pump Repair Kit". That is where the Mr. Gasket #12S is listed. The guy at the parts store said that is the one for my vehicle. For more info, the instruction sheet appears on this page:


@drumvirt said he included a relay. What is that for?

I have a related question. I included a picture of the stock mechanical fuel pump. Note that there are two intake ports on the pump. I presume the large one is from the fuel tanks (I have dual tanks). What is the smaller line for? I haven't traced back either line, but I'm hoping someone here has some insight. The longer line pointing up is the output (to the carb) from this pump.

If the smaller port is some kind of vent, what do I do with that line when I install the electric fuel pump?

Apologies for my lack of knowledge but: did these squares come with just the mechanical fuel pump or did they come with an electric pump to assist? My new to me '85 clearly has an aftermarket electric pump on the passenger side frame and it's prone to the electrical connectors falling off, thus no pump and the truck will not run until I fix the electrical pump. It must not pass fuel when the pump is in-op.

I ask because I either need to replace that pump or plumb it all per factory spec to the mechanical pump with no electric pump at all in the mix.

Thanks for any guidance and knowledge, much appreciated!
