Removing paint and "polishing" it while maintaining patina?

Just picked up this c20 and I love the brownish green paint and patina on it. I would love to clean it up and get rid of this random paint unless it's the results of paint stripper. I'm not sure. The weather has been garbage so I haven't been able to spend some real time on it yet.

Any thoughts on what it is and my options?

And I'll be doing some general research and googling too, so I'm just hoping for some extra tips.

Cool truck! I'd ditch the bug guard ASAP. That'll improve the look quickly. As for the paint, that's very odd. Almost looks like someone brush painted some house paint on it, but why? I guess if the bed on the one side was dented and they used body filler and then brushed paint on it, this could explain things, but the fact the tailgate is also painted sort of shoots holes in that theory.

Do you have any Goof Off? Maybe try a little in a small area that's as inconspicuous as possible, and see if it starts to come off and leave the factory paint.

Thank you! I was looking for one for months and this just worked out perfectly.

And that's exactly what it looks like to me as well. It definitely had a cap or rack on it at some point. I'll try that on the tailgate and see how it does.

As for the bug guard, it's from the 80s, so I can't decide if I'm going to pull it off or not. Part of me enjoys keeping it as "original" as I can. Outside of suspension and basics but it also helps hide a kinked hood. I'm still deciding if I want to even try to bend it back (after lubricating the hood arms) or just replace it.

It definitely has that look but feels pretty smooth. I need to investigate more.

is that "Moss Gold" ? I think that is the GM name - our '75 GMC 1/2 ton had that color. As far as that Patina - no idea how that happened. LOL

Hahaha if it was all over, I would probably keep it. But the couple random spots is just annoying my OCD. [emoji23]

I haven't looked yet, but that works for me!

Some people just call it brown but it always looked more of a green to me anyway.

Have you tried some rubbing compound?
If this is house paint or rattle can you might be able to get through.
If better paint. You can try some 3000 or 2000 grit wet sandpaper with a light touch.

Of course in an inconspicuous area.

I haven't done anything yet. But that sounds like a couple good options. Thanks

It's been raining all week since I bought it. So far I've just been making sure it runs good and it won't kill me. Lol

If I were you, I would wet sand it with 600 grit, then 1000, and buff it with some boiled linseed oil.

I did the same to the roller job on my yellow truck

(don't pay attention to those god awful wheels)

I actually can't see your pictures for some reason. I've noticed that happens a lot for me on here. Is there something I'm missing? I've tried the Tapatalk app (paid version too) and tried using a browser on my phone.

But thanks for the info! Boiled linseed oil on a vehicle is a new one for me but I'll definitely check it out.
