removing cluster from 89 burb

Hi All,

Im in the process of trying to remove the instrument cluster in my 89 burb due to an intermittent speedo issue. Just have a quick question regarding removal of the speedo cable. It looks like theres a couple of screws that are required to be removed for the speedo cable to come out. Just wondering if thats the correct way to go with these? Anybody able to help out?

I've had some feedback on a facebook group to just pull the cluster forward and then remove the speedo cable. Unfortantly I cant pull it forward due to the dash design. The cluster needs to move to the right in order to clear everything. Theres a metal beam behind the cluster and the speedo cable is right next to it and thats preventing the whole lot from moving to the right

Pretty sure that there is a tap you push to release the cable from the cluster. Once that’s free, the cluster will pull away from the dash far enough to remove the screw that holds the speed sensor connector to the cluster.

Plus you need to get the dash pad up and out of the way. I’ve never been able to get the cluster out without pulling the pad too. You could just take the screws above the glove box and by the passenger door and just prop the pad up too.

Well that method wont work for me - full fibreglass dash from the right hand drive conversion.

Was it a tap or a spring clip? Or are those the same things?

It wasn't a tap I believe that may have been a typo and was supposed to be tab. At least that's my interpretation as I did have to depress a tab/spring clip. That was a new one for me as every other car I've worked on with a mechanical speedo the cable was screwed to the back of the cluster.

OK I'm fixing to try this myself later today. Thanks for the clarification. I've got an extra cluster so I can at least get a feel for the clip on the back before I yank the bastard that's in there out of there later today.
