Poverty Caps Keep Rusting

I've used that spray on galvanizing before at work for something, I can't remember. It holds up pretty well and is just a dull silver paint, but not exactly a paint.

Okay I may try it then. The caps are in very rough shape so they will never be what they aren’t if that makes any sense. I could try that galvanized stuff and even if it is a fuller finish, it may still look good with some clearcoat on them.

thanks for the information everyone! I had no idea there was galvanization in a can lol. Now it’s just a matter of wire brushing these back down a 3rd time….. ugh lol.

As a side note, in attempt to dissuade any anxiety you might have had, they got some brand new fresh dipped back into the shop and I snagged a few pix - for the truly interested.

It really does look awesome, imo. The only reason I didn't spray the Honda wheels with it is because I didn't want to answer the questions. Knowwhatimsayin?

Do you realize you can buy spray glav at basically any supply house/hardware store? Also it is nowhere near as as good at corrosion resistance as hot dipped galvanizing or hot stick galv.
Spray galv is just zinc rich paint and generally not accepted in applications that require hot dip galvanized metals. Save for maybe small touch up work.

Well I had no idea you could buy it in a can either. I was aware of both hot and cold galvanizing dip methods but had no idea there was any sort of galvanizing available for DIY applications. I will have to pick up a can and try it out just for fun if nothing else.

Nope.

Not to say it’s no good. But it’s not nearly as effective as hot dipped. It’s paint that offers more sacrificial corrosion resistance.

I’m going to try this spray galvanization on the 3/4 ton caps, but as wall hangers. I did finally make some special mounts for the new new 1/2 ton caps to go on my 16” steelies (5 lug) and I definitely like the diameter better than the huge 3/4 ton caps.

sandblast, prime and paint. a paint job is only as good as the prep job ..doesn't matter what its on.
