Has anyone used POR 15 to try to prevent rust? I was going to try it tomorrow on my hood to see how it was. Was thinking of getting some sandpaper, not sure what grit yet, and POR 15. Have some surface rust on the hood that I Was going to try to sand through and some horribly dead paint that practically flakes off. Anyone have any thoughts on how I should approach this job? Also if you have had experience with POR 15 I'd love to hear your input too.

Thanks!

First don't use it over any kind of paint. Only apply it to bare metal.

Second always remove as much of the rust as possible and use a good rust converter before applying it. If you use the 3 step system that POR15 has and follow the directions to a T you will have great results.

If you don't it will really be hit or miss on the results.

Also you have to cover over the POR15 as UV light will cause it to fail.

POR15 Is not a rust converter but simply encapsulates the rust to prevent further oxidation

POR-15 is more of a frame paint, and prep has to be done for it to work good for that job too. I would sand off the loose paint and get a couple cans of rustoleum. As long as you have some etch it will hold. Paint flakes when it is sprayed on a slick surface so the whole thing needs a scuff-up. It also has to be good and clean before spraying so you might want to wipe it down with denatured alcohol after sanding. I've seen some damn good rattlecan paint jobs, best I've liked were satin paint. It covers the overspray better.

What grit of sandpaper should I use for the sanding? And MadOgre, when you say I have to Co ER over the POR15 do you mean put some kind of paint over it? Or paint it on in the shade?

You have to have a solid color over it so no clear. This is to protect it from sunlight. Also most paints don't naturally adhere to POR15. You have to use some specialty primers over the POR15 and then a solid paint over that.

I would think it would be easier and cheaper to get a new used hood then to go to all the trouble that is associated with applying POR15

Okay. I was looking at it online and it said it could be painted over the rust as a top coat. I didn't know if it would really work well or not.

No it can not be used as a top coat.

And by the time its all said and done the $ just doesn't make sense for a hood that you could find for a $100 or less in good shape with out rust.

If it's just light surface rust, sand it down and repaint it. Por15 is mainly used for under carriage. I'd sand that hood down and spray paint it.

Paint in general will prevent rust. Lots of people use rustolium. It seems to work as good as anything and won't cost much. A good paint job is all in the prep work. Sand it down good and spray it. If you don't like it, sand it down and spray it again. As long as you get the rust off the metal, paint will protect it until the paint wears off.
