Today, while loosening the thermostat housing/waterneck to change my thermostat, I broke the plastic piece (pictured below) on the solenoid pictured below. Attempts to identify the part have helped me narrow it down to 2 possibilities: one it is a TCS solenoid used to regulate vacuum, or two it is a fast idle stop solenoid. Both ports were plumbed together, forming a loop. I cannot imagine that is correct. Does any know how/where it is supposed to hook up? 2 wires go to the solenoid. One is yellow and one is red.

At this time I removed the solenoid from my truck and am looking for a replacement. Without the part, my truck runs as well as it did before the part was removed. Is this something I NEED to reinstall? My truck no longer has the AIR pump, EGR has been blocked off, did not come with cats and has an edelbrock 1406 in place of the factory carb. My truck was originally a big block and is equipped with AC (not functioning due to missing belt)

That is GM #1997479, Throttle Return Solenoid. It controls the vacuum pod on the L/F of the quadrajet. It opens the throttle between 1500-2000 RPM on deceleration to prevent back fires. I got a new one from the Parts Place.

Thank you for your assistance, Craig. You have literally bailed me out of every situation I have posted about on this forum. I took the truck for a 20 mile ride consisting of both freeway and surface streets today. It ran exactly the same as it did before, all gauges continue reading within normal ranges and I do not have any new sounds, odd smells or leaks. With that being said, I am not going to replace it at this time. However, I am going to save the bracket and solenoid should any issues arise over time.
