Evaporator/charcoal canister for the emissions system. Should be on your vacuum label on the top of the radiator support if it's still there.

I had a new engine put in my truck, and I never noticed that all the tubing going to and fro the cannister are either broken or diconnected. I now have an edelbrock 1406 carb in place of the rochester quadrajet. Do I still need it for anything?

There is supposed to be a line running to it from the fuel tank. So only thing that I would worry about is if that line is open and venting fumes anywhere and could be a fire hazard.

Since that's a vent you may not want to cap it off, you could get vapor lock or over pressurization at the tank.

Check your emissions laws too. I have never seen anybody remove that or what they do with the tank vent line so I can't comment on that.

My truck has been passing emmisions with no problems for the last 4 years with all the broken or disconnected lines comming or going from that cannister.

Well in that case, maybe you can get by with one of those vent caps in the fuel vent line like the drive axles have.

I don't believe any edelbrock carb has any provision for the charcoal canister unless its a quadrajet. That's why they say check your local state laws. if you plug the line from your fuel tank, your tank will pressurize on warm days and actually push fuel through your mechanical pump and over flow through the next easiest spot it can escape from.

I had the fire dept show up because mine spewed fuel all over a parking lot one day. I had to drill a hole through the fuel cap. I thought the fuel cap would vent as it says it will after 2psi but apparently not.

I just drilled a hole from the back side of the cap. you don't have to go all the way through before you hit the actuall vented part of the cap. that way no debris will enter your tank but it is vented to the outside air.

And just leave your canister where it is but you should plug off that fuel tank vent line somehow but make sure you drill out your fuel caps.

Have you ever seen a jerry can with gas in it expand in the sun ?

I converted my diesel to gas and the diesel tanks don't have vent lines. That's how I found out about that issue.

I just leave my vent line open. It works just the same as a tank vent line on an older vehicle.

emission laws aside you need to vent the tank. on a factory system this happens though the charcoal canister. what I like to do is to find the vent line at the charcoal canister run it up high and put a fuel filter on it to keep dirt from being introduced into the system. highdesertranger

I chunked the vap. can and ran the tank vent to a tee with my front axle vent tube all the way up to the hood , behind the driver's headlight . I hid the tee down in the frame rail and I passed smog in cali with no sticker , 6700 gvw tag on the door jam , assumed a federal truck.
