New to this website as of this week. A couple of months ago I bought a '87 longbed with a VERY tired original 305, it started and ran, but it left a smoke trail like the Space Shuttle. Over the Memorial Day weekend yanked the engine and TH400 trans and installed a TBI 305 / 700R4 from an '89 Camaro (i had pulled that engine myself years ago, car had around 90K miles. Some things seem to fit well, shifter mechanism, trans cooler lines, but some things i can use advice:
1. the Camaro 700R4 trans is shorter. Was there a longer 700R4 made for trucks? or did they just use a longer front section for the driveshaft?
2. the Camaro 700R4 trans has a trans mount just ahead of the rear cone. i have seen some 700R4 trans that have the mount in the rear cone in the Caprice model, would that be the same for the truck?
3. the truck already has the 1227747 ECM but it has different "chips" since it came with the TH400. I have the wiring diagram for that ECM and i also have the electrical connection to the 700R4 (from the same Camaro). i have not checked yet the diff ratio, what else would i need to determine what chips i need to use so the ECM can operate the lockup converter?
I named the truck "Plan B", I have been building a 1953 Chevy 1/2 ton for 15 years, and I chose to buy a second project (hopefully one I can drive in another month or so). That is where I stole the 305/700R4 from, so it gives me a good excuse to start looking for an LS engine for the '53
thank you in advance for your suggestions!
