It sounds like you are on the right track. But honestly, if you're going to build an engine you need reasonably accurate measuring instruments. You can pick up an inexpensive digital vernier caliper from harbor fright or others that will work well enough for your purposes. I think the last one I picked up was $15 and it works about as well as my $100 Starrett.

You are correct. That's what I'm doing today. I'm a cabinet maker and I have all the right tools. Why not have the right tools for this. I do just believe I have the wrong size bearings. I will keep you updated. Thanks
