I have a 1986 k10 Chevy with a 14bolt rear. The guts are out of a m1028(4.56 Detroit) but the housing is from a 1989 suburban. I've read somewhere that the pinion supports are different from the old housing vs the new ribbed style housing. Could this be my rear end problem I've been chasing?

Second design axles have more fins on the center section.

First design axles (1984 and earlier) use a different pinion straddle bearing than 2nd design (1985 and later).

Since both the housing and internals (in the axle you have assembled) are included in the 2nd design group - they should be compatible.

The fins didn't show up until '88 or something. They were intended to regain strength lost due to a change in the material the housing was cast with.

I thought 86 was the change out year? The 14 bolt bible says 85 is the split year but also says 72-88 were the first design. How ever if you have ribs on the top and bottom of the pumpkin in addition to the 2 on each side then it s the second later design if not its the older first design

I don't know when the pinion bearing changed, I just know that in '88 or so, they got all the ribs on the center housing.

Ya exactly if you have the extra ribs it is second design otherwise it is first design.
