He was only like 5’ tall and 300lbs. If I cut him off at the knees he’d really been screwed! Lol.
Nah, he wouldn’t have given it away yet. Or ever. Pretty telling that he had so many “projects” laying around.
But will keep an eye on it. Although it’s literally one of those “needs everything” trucks.
Thought about offering him $2500 on the way out but I’m not after a needs everything project. Hell, I don’t even want or need another K20. I’m after a C10. But I got a little @AyWoSch Motors goin on and thought maybe it was actually clean.
The way it sat it was just embarrassing. I can drive a vehicle with rust. I couldn’t drive one that looked like playdough hour from preschool.

Dealt with that sorta thing many times.

It was rotted to hell, mismatched tires, terrible home done camo spray paint job, roached out interior, did I mention rotted out... anyway, had a for sale sign on it, and it was in a parking lot, so I figured it drove, and I'm that desperate to find an 80s burb, so I call the guy.
Pot head from Colorado, said it runs great, clean title, but he hated the milage, so he got a car, blah blah.
I'm thinking hes gonna want $600-800, I'll hit him at $400.... nope, he said he wants $4500.
I'm like "what!?". Then hes like, well I might take less, make an offer.
I said how bout 4. He said nah, I cant take 4000, I said "no $400, it's a piece of ****".
He hung up on me after mumbling somthing.

Then there was a 80, K10, short bed stepper, sqiurcle, here in town for years. finally there was for sale sign, so I stopped by. Think I shared this one before on here.
Old guy was nice enough, but he wanted some crazy amount for it. Cant remember, think it was like 7800 or something. Then hes telling me how great it ran.... ran? As in past tense?, "yeah, well it stopped running and I never bothered to fix it". That's not "running", that's "not running", simple. And then hes telling me how he and his brother had done a bunch of body work and bondo to it and painted it. For one, primer isn't painted, its primered, not painted. And the body work looked like ****, either they did a terrible job, or they did it back in the 80s and it has that many miles on it. No thanks.

Aside from that, I've had pretty much good or expected experiences.

I know that I've told this story here before at some point, but my absolute worst was last January when I attempted to buy an old Pontiac Grand Prix ex drag car roller. I spoke with the seller, discussed price, came to an agreement, grabbed a trailer and cash, and headed that way.

When I got there, the car was exactly as he described. Good frame and cage work, body really rough, etc. Definitely worth his asking price but not more. Then the games started....."well, I could sell those wheels for X amount" and "you couldn't even build that cage and install that seat for what I'm asking for it".

Needless to say, he ended up wanting more that 2x what he originally quoted me and I walked. Frustrating to say the least.

I spotted an '84 K1500 in the back yard of a guy's house that I was delivering asphalt for. We talked, and I looked at the truck. It had a busted driver side window from the neighbor being careless with the lawn mower, the inside was decent but had the usual cracked dash and faded plastic. The truck looked like a pile of crap from a distance, especially with the atrocious rattle can camo, but I realized it had an 8000 pound Warn Winch, Warn hubs a SM465, a NP205 and a a 14 bolt rear (all swapped from a heavier truck, obviously.) and underneath the krylon was a rock solid bondo free body and frame. He wanted $4500. I told him that was a little rich for me, but I'd let my buddy with more money know about it. A few weeks later, I delivered another load of asphalt, and he asked me: "When are taking that truck with you?" I told him I wasn't paying $4500, and he said to make him an offer. After some banter, we agreed on $2500. I honestly thought I got hosed at first, after some TLC and some citristrip to the atrocious rattle-can paint job, the truck really seems like a bargain.

Happens to the best of us. The used car market is a complete joke right now. Yesterday's beater is today's collectable. The days of sub $2000 running beater grade squares, and sub $10k clean squares are well behind us. You can either be patient and wait for a deal, pay a premium for scrap metal, or pay a second mortgage for a quality specimen. Don't despair though, deals do indeed exist, patience is key.

pay a premium for scrap metal

A few years back I had a customer that knew I dealt with Squares quite often. He asked about me looking at his truck so he would know a fair price in which to sell. I agreed that I would take a ride out and bring my hauler just in case I wanted it. He said that it had a great running 350, new 33x12.50 tires and had just been painted. He also added that it had "low gears" to compensate for the 33's. So....I asked what color he had painted it and he replied "CAMO". Well, I knew right then that this wasn't going to be a cream puff.
I pulled up to his trailer and saw a piece of a Square out beside the field. He busted from the front trailer door and motioned me toward that truck. I got out and walked over toward the piece and my senses were violated immediately by the mountain of trash in the back of it. That sumbich stunk!!! Anyway, I first asked him about where the tires were and he explained that he had sold them and the wheels, there were some dingy may-pops on the front as it was a 2x truck and not 4x4(which he told me it was). Then came the next question of where was the engine; he replied immediately that he had sold that also. I was past aggravated already at the situation as I was obviously not looking at what he implied about the truck.
As I continued to look, he started talking about the bodywork and paint that he and his cousin had just completed. "Fenders are new" he said, just before I kicked the entire lower end out from behind the fender well. A chunk of paper-mache/playdough (thanks for the reference Grit Dog) bondo crap the size of a notebook landed on my boot. The owner got furious and started cussing me as I comically retorted that camo paint and bondo don't make them new. That's how they do it in Fayetteville I reckon.
I looked at the truck and thought about a few of the parts that were salvageable and made an offer of $50 to haul it away. He came back with $75 and I pulled $60 from my pocket and told him I was done. He snatched the money away and made haste toward the trailer. I backed my hauler to the side of the truck and tossed the winch across the "pristine" cab (camo didn't hide the waves). I pulled the truck right over on the roof and dumped all those stinking diapers and other meth-head crap right onto the ground.
He busted from the trailer door again cussing and fussing and asked me what I was doing. I told him "I bought your junk, not your sh*t"! I pushed the truck back upright, loaded it and hauled it away. I smiled the whole way home thinking how he ran around that trash pile like he was a Native American at a Pow-Wow. I heard him cuss the length of the driveway, all the while making obscene gestures and motions.
I'm still laughing about it 25 years later too!!!

Went to look at this truck this weekend.
Seller was super responsive with a phone number….good sign.
From the phone call.
Sellers story was truck was Uncles truck since new and he bought it xx number of years ago.
Rust? Nope nothing rusted though.
Condition, just like you see in the pics. Lightly used only a few dings and scratches.
Paint? Faded but good repaint 15 years ago.
Tires? Like new…
Runs and drives great blah blah blah.

Get there guy only comes out to open his gate says go check it out in your own. Ok. Cool.
Let’s see from there, cab corners, fender corners most all have rot. Some have been bondo’d up looks like years ago by Ray Charles with cheap Autozone body filler.
Couple big dents look like they had the same guy who didn’t own a sanding block fill them with copious amounts of bondo as well. Top of bed stale pockets ripped out.
Engine cold started and ran well, until it was either sucking air from the massive gas leak at the drivers tank or was just out of gas.
Tires were like new minus the 1991 mfg date!
And literally everything else on the truck was OLD. Aside from a tune up and battery that truck hadn’t had a new part installed on it in 30 years.
Called guy (hes in the house won’t come out) said don’t want to run down your battery. Not pulling fuel now. Tried switching tanks. He says I filled one tank full last week. Can’t remember which. Keep trying.
Call him again. Hey bud, has a gas leak and idk which may have gas because they both read empty but appear to work (and I’d already switched tanks once while it was running and it kept running). He says if you’re really interested I’ll get off the couch and go get some gas…
WTF 10 min ago you said one was full.
And the guy had a dozen or more old trucks and cars some nice some like this one. He was a flipper. Looked like his specialties are replacing the carpet and posting CL adds!
Whatever. No harm no foul I suppose.
But to outright lie about the condition over the phone? Guess there’s people who wouldn’t have noticed the cake frosting bondo job or just bought it without running.

Guy was a real bag of _____. At least it was only a couple hours I wasted……

Been there done that. I live up in norther WA close to the Canadian border, and I've been as far south as Portland, OR looking for a truck- nice looking C10 shortwide was asking 17k for it, "rust free", so the kid and I roadtripped down there to check it out at this small sales lot- looked perfect in pictures. I arrived earlier than I told him I would, and wandered in to look at it, and it had rust under every fender, and one door had damage that had been covered up with a paintbrush job (not kidding). He wandered out and said "hey, are you the one with the appointment?" I said "Nope" and just kept walking back to my car.

Couple weeks later, a lady was selling a '78 BB C15 Sierra Grand three hours south(Rust free, lol). So I showed up early and wandered onto that lot and they were dumb enough to leave it outside on a lift. All the body panels on the bottom were rotten as well as heavy frame rust. The other '85 they had for 8k actually looked nicer- respray was basic and old, but it was straight- until I saw the firewall was completely rusted out and packed with some kind of rubberized black stuff and painted over- I put my hand straight through. Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace are a nightmare. EvilBay is even harder because people either want a fortune, or you don't get to see it in person before purchasing and it's all the way across the country.

I posted on a Facebook page for 10s and asked "whatya got"? I guy reached out from 2.5 hours south, and I ended up bringing an '81 shortwide home with a rough body, very good bones, a refreshed engine and trans and no shoddy patchwork, the electric windows even still work- it has a dent in the rear quarter, nothing's been covered up, it's all there for the eye to see. It has some rust to be addresssed on the doors and door sills, rockers as well, but the frame and undercarriage are absolutely immaculate. I paid 7k for it, and I'm glad to be getting to work and out of the market. Was it a good deal? I don't know, but in my neck of the woods it was the best I can do, these trucks are really picked over in this area.

Yeah the plethora of old squares around here I think means 3 out of 4 or maybe 9 of 10 are NOT that clean old unmolested, nothing hidden, truck that the pics look like.
But compared to many other parts of the continent this area is still at the top for nice old vehicles imo. Although all the good ones and deals are in Oregon! Lol

And yet, I sold a set of tire chains to a kid yesterday. He haggled me down on price via text and I agreed to the price. Showed up yesterday when he said he would and then apologized for the Text price haggling. Said he hates when people do that and paid full asking price.
There’s hope!
