Need some help, i am looking at 2 different trucks trying to decide 85 1/2 ton 4x4 small lift 3/4 ton axels with 456, or 86 1/2 ton 2wd both 350 700r4. it will be third vehicle for me I have a nice relaibel DD that gets good mileage and 79 corvette play toy. The 2wd makes sense due to it be less expensive, better mileage when i do drive it to get project parts, possibly hauling later in life. But i really like the 4x4 and like the fact it sits higher than the 2wd.

It really depends on the goal for it. If 4wd is not necessary, then go for 2wd. I bought 4wd, and once in a while use it as 4wd ;however, 2wd with a locker would have fit better now that few life events changed.

Agree that if you like it and will not be too happy with 2wd, go with 4wd.

Please, Please, PLEASE tell me you are not talking about one of these cali-lean jackasses I keep seeing all the time. Don't ruin a nice square that way...

If you actually intend to build a legitimate prerunner then I say go for it. What better way to use a 4x4?

Also, there are very very few lift kits (if any) for the 2wds. Ask me how I know... If you like the lifted look 4x4 is essentially REQUIRED.

cali-lean F#$% no unless I'm pulling an overloaded trailer.

appreantly the term pre-runner has changed alot over the years, how abot a pic instead. Like this if I do anything to a 2wd... i would never buy a 4x4 and convert it to 2wd.

I would rock the 4wd. Never know you may go some where you shouldn't be and it save your bacon.

4 X 4 with 3/4 axles @ 4.56 can haul your buddy or yer wife outa the ditch - even if their truck is bigger. Infrequent use means the mileage difference just won't factor in.

Have you bought it yet ? Pics ?

Yes and no. i didnt buy two i was refering to as the the 2wd had to much rust in the cab from not being repair when the sun visor was ripped off. That 4x4 was everything i wanted except fuel injection so i found another that is EFI/700r4 4x4 appears to have 108k needs some work but all of them do for what i could afford. Supposedly has 3/4 ton springs sits high has blocks in rear but not front, rides rougher than any IFS truck i have been in recently.
